Tilt Trailer
#1
I just picked up a used Floe 8x10 snowmobile trailer to haul around my 4 wheeler on. i was wondering about the tilt feature. Is it bad for the tongue of the trailer to slam down when loading over time? Also it has a shock on the front to help with it. Would a new shock help with the slamming? I am just curious cause I do have a set of ramps I can use but I think it would be nice to use the tilt and not have to carry the ramps everywhere. Thanks

I wouldn't think it would be hurting the trailer too bad, since that was how it was designed to be loaded. Could you add a rubber bumper and still be able to lock it? Regarding the shock, if it is in good condition and provides resistance across all it's stroke I don't think there'd be much to gain by replacing it. On the other hand, if the shock is shot...
Also, I bet with use you will get a feel for how fast to ride up on it and where to stop to get the bed to tip flat more slowly. Having used a slick decked snowmobile trailer a few times, there was a thin line between not fast enough and sliding back down, and too fast and slamming the thing over hard, but after a few times you get the hang of it.
If that didn't work, and you don't intend to use the trailer for snowmobiles, you could think about adding some rungs or stick on grippy stuff so you have enough traction to crawl up the inclined bed slowly....
That said, lately I've been using a Zieman trailer intended for ATV's and it's really slick and worth having.

As JeffinTD mentioned the shock absorber may be worn. It is often possible to replace the original with a unit having higher resistance which may be a consideration for you. Tilt bed trailers take a bit of getting used to but it's a nice feature once you learn to use it.
