Anyone tow their ATV with a car?

The problems that come from towing with a car generally aren't because it's not enough power. What you really have to watch out for is overheating the transmission if it's an automatic. They're not really designed to deal with that extra heat, so if you're pushing it too hard you may see a trail of smoke behind you by the time you get to the top of a hill. Maybe more importantly is the brakes. I never towed with a car, but I had a little chevy s10 x-cab that I towed with for a while. I ended up selling it because I didn't trust the brakes on it, even an extra 1000 pounds made it a whole lot harder to get that thing stopped, and I can only assume it would be worse with a car.

I towed 2 quads on a 8x10 trailer from Alberta to the St. A's Dunes - 1500km each way with my 1979 Dodge Duster (Slant Six). No problems - not fast threw the hills and burnt a few more litles of oil but it did it.

We tow mine with an 06 Dakota club cab- with the High Output V8, no problems (we can either fit it in the box or tow it on a trailer). My dad's looking to replace it with either an 08 Titan or 08 Sierra/Silverado...</end quote></div>
Just replaced a 06 Silverado with an 08 Titan. Tows our trailer much easier.

Not sure on the S-10, but my Ranger (5 speed) is only rated to tow 1200 pounds. Never had any problems towing a 5x10 trailer with 2 quads on it. But more important would be if I were stopped and was over the towing limit. Could be just a warning, maybe a ticket or worse, park the trailer and get something that's rated to tow it.
Same thing could happen with a car. Especially if you're in an accident. Then you may have a few unexpected legal problems.

My s10 had the towing package, and was rated for 3500 or 4500. I couldn't imagine trying to stop a load when it's loaded to it's max.
I replaced the s10 with a 84 extended dodge b250 van with a 318. The van weighs 7,000 lbs, so it doesn't notice the weight of the trailer in acceleration or braking, and there's even enough room inside it for 2 full size sport quads if I take out the couch and the 2nd row seat. Then if it's just me and a buddy going, we don't even need a trailer, and the quads are kept enclosed and out of the weather.

My wife says I can't afford to feed the F 250 for a 3 hour drive every weekend to bow hunt. I was thinking Esape, CRV, Patriot and
tow the ATV. These are all around 25 MPG, but after towing? and are they up to the task. Most unibody SUV's are rated at 1500. Anybody
towed with the smal SUV's?

I towed my 86' Honda TRX350FM Foreman 4x4 on a 49' Ford truckbed trailer with a 1974 Datsun 610 Station Wagon the Datsun wagon had the big 1800 series 4 cylinder with direct port fuel injection with no problem's at all , it had the heavy step bumper with a 2" ball !
Then i traded bought a 67' ford f100 londbed pickup with the big 6 cylinder and hauled the Foreman in the bed and pulled the 49' ford truckbed trailor with a 89' Suzuki LT4WD Quad Runner in it with no proiblem , then i traded the ford for a 1976 Dodge Ram Sport short bed pickup with a slant 6 again no problem !
Then i traded the 76' Dodge Ram for a 87' Chevy S10 Tahoe Longbed with a 2.8 liter V6 EFI with the overdrive auto transmission with the Foreman on the S10 , and pulled a 4'x12' lowboy trailer with a 93' Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ and the S10 did a better job than both the Ford and Dodge Ram pickup the S10 had a heavy duty supension on the rear and got better mpg's as well !
I've seen some small car's haul more than they should , but the DOT doesn't stop them unless they really look unsafe for the road , i now have the 87' Chevy S10 Tahoe longbed and a 88' GMC Jimmy 4x4 MPV with a 4.3 Liter V6 EFI and the overdrive auto trans with the lockup converter ; while it has more pulling power it lack's the giddy up go of the S10 and get 17 mpg while the S10 get's 23 mpg fully loaded !.......
