Default Trailer Size

I'm looking at trailers for hauling my '07 vinson. I'd like one as small and light as possible. One I'm looking at now is 4'X6' with short sides and front and a 44" tail gate/ramp. The atv has a 50" wheel base and 82" overall length, it will be fine without the tail gate on but I'm not sure about with it on. Does anyone have experience with 4X6 trailers?

thanks

The only reason to get a trailer that just fits you ATV vs getting the next availble size up would be storage space for the trailer when not in use and price of the trailer. In use, you will never regret having a larger trailer, larger trailers tow and back up easier and if you buy one that is large enough, having a trailer that can hold two ATV's could make a big difference in your convenience of riding if you ride with friends.

A 6' long trailer could hold most full sized utility ATV's with the gate up depending on the trailer design - front end height and stored ramp angle. 4' will also fit most ATV's with stock tires but it will be tight - there will be no room for error when loading. I've had lots of trailers, from small, single bike units to the one in my pics - for one ATV I'd put the optiimal size at a deck that is 8' long and 5' wide. And as said above, unless storage space and money are big issues, go for a 5' by 12' so you can hold two bikes.

Thanks for the reply,
I know a bigger trailer is always better for anything. The only reason I'm looking for a small trailer is becaue I'm towing it behind a 94 accord and I'll be taking on a long trip over some hilly terrain.
this is the trailer I've been looking at

thanks for the advice

That one should do it. Since the Vinson has more overhang at the back, you might have to load the ATV in back-first so some of the rear fenders will overhang the front raised part of the trailer. You can test this fit easily without the trailer. Those side and front rails look to be about 7" to 8" high. But a regular cinderblock or an 8" high block of wood up against the rear tire. Then use a level to measure vertically down to the ground from the front most point of the ATV. measure from the level mark to the near edge of the block - if it's less than 72" then it will fit with the gate up in full verticle position. This is if you backed the ATV in. To measure it for front loading, do the same thing only put the block up against the front tire and the level at the back.

The gate on that trailer probably uses a pin to lock it in the up position. If it turns out that you really want that trailer but you don't have enough length, you may be able to rig some form of chain to hold the gate up at a slight angle.

I still say that you will be less than happy with the 48" width.

HaH, I have you beat. In my younger days, I used to pull a covered double wide snowmobile trailer with a 73 Pinto... Or should I say that the trailer drove me... Ah youth. It is a wonder I survived it.
