You can do it with the tailgate down. You may find that you have a better fit if you back it in, depending on how much rear overhang on the quad and how high the cab of the truck is. The slant of the back window can also be a factor. But it will fit, my brother can put his AC700 TRV (a 2-up bike) in the back of his '05 Chevy crew cab with the 5.5' bed.
