Right. And for you, a straight axle works fine. You wouldn't make it very far where I go, withOUT IRS and your axle would be getting dragged over every rock and your axle would be beat to crap.

But that's where I go. Where you go, it's obviously not an issue. That's why there is no "#1".

Slag,

I see you're in Antioch. Where are you planning on riding??? If you're going to do the Rubicon or Fordyce Creek trail....then get the AC650, if you've ruled out a SP500/600/700.

You'll be glad you had the clearance, locking differential and IRS.

Ken talk about ironic ( just now finished a bid for Granite Bay job ! ) In answer to your question, those areas would not be at the top of my list but Im sure I'll be forced to ride there with my buddies once in awhile. Im just not a big fan of rocks. I prefer exploring trails and putting on some miles. I sure understand the cat would be better ie IRS and ground clearance but have heard that an IRS is not the best for all conditions. Another factor is that the Praire 700 is about $900 less and no payments, interest etc for a year. I ride a Kawasaki Classic 1500 V-Twin bike so I might be a little swayed as well ( grins ) Many thanks for your input on this Ken. Would love to talk to you if you could email phone number. Thanks again. Jeff

I sent a private message...if not...email me at ken(REMOVE)@racerxband.com

I added the remove so a bot wouldn't pick up the email address. Just put Ken, or basically anything infront of racerxband.com and I will get it.

I'm headed to Bear Valley riding for the weekend...be back Sunday. I'm a consultant....and this week I'm home for sure. So I'll be around.

We've got a problem here, with these manufactures making such big motors and mating them with IRS, I feel sorry for the new 650 cat owners with big *****, cause there's going to be alot of new injuries. I have a 2003 ac 500i and to be honest with you it doesn't handle quite so good at high speeds don't get me wrong I love the bike but sometimes two things just don't go together like the super high ground clearance and the IRS mated with a 650 power house were going to see alot of guys in the bush. Also it worries me when you see rumors of 800cc power plants mated with these suspension platforms, I think there looking for trouble. Its hard to get the best of both worlds but you just can't change the facts. Maybe a self tuning independant might work but were taking future trash now.

People who are REQUIRE IRS, don't care about "High Speed" handling.

Rock crawling requires IRS, Locking differentials and High clearance. High Speed cornering is a moot thing, since you rarely go over 5MPH.
You'd be surprised how fast people will go knowing theres 800cc of power under them rock climbing or not why need a huge motor then if your doing only 5M/h you could do it with a 300cc right?

Default Who is the King of the Utiltys?

I have been off-roading for over 30 years. I have out climbed "totally built and locked" jeeps with my full size PU with a rear Detroit locker and a limited slip in the front, other than that it is stock, no lift, and 7.50X16 bias ply tires. My 20-year-old daughter drove the Rubicon trail from back to front (running trail backwards is said to be more difficult) in their Jeep with no front driveline (and only needed the strap once), out performing a few totally built and locked Jeeps and Land Cruisers. For someone to say my ATV wont go where their ATV will go because mine does not have IRS is crap. There are places they have an advantage, if it has a better rider. The driver or rider has a whole lot more to do with which vehicle or ATV will go than if it is a straight axle or an IRS. I have out climbed IRS ATV's in the rocks more than once. I have out climbed a Polaris SP 700 up a rock canyon on our 350 Rancher 4X4. I am not the only one to get to the top nor the first. I have yet to see the “ultimate ATV”.

Just because your ATV has "true 4-wd, a V-twin, IRS, Wings, or what ever, does not make you king. Sometimes I think there is a lot of "envy" going on around here.

I have not done the Rubicon trail. I have done a lot of off-roading in Moab, UT. If the trail gets real "technical" I prefer our Rancher to our Rubicon. I told my daughter I had made that comment in a forum and someone had posted a reply saying our Rancher would get beat to crap if it could even do the Rubicon trail. All my daughter did was laugh and say that they must have never been 4-wheeling before.

I am sure I don't own the most capable ATV's, and I am not the best rider, but we do make a good and capable combination.

KenHower, great picture. Looks like 25 miles from our house.
