What a bunch of bitching. I agree with the guy who said let your butt decide. I for one bought the Prarie after test riding the Polaris, grizzly and even a couple sport bikes. I didn't see my self on an automatic, but after riding the P650 there was no comparison. I have a couple buddies with the polaris atv's and they love them, they are a little older and appreciate the cush suspension. I like to ride and ride fast. The only thing I ever pull is my buddies out of the mud and snow. I bought a sport bike not a tractor.

I find test ridding a bike at a dealer ship is not the answer. At your dealership you will see a quad with stock tires and if you're lucky... maybe if your lucky you will see a bit of OFF ROAD like those machines are designed for. Don't go and ask somebody who had a Polaris or Kawy or Yamaha or Honda what the best because even if they would had spend half of their time at the shop with their bike, they would still say it's the best... Personally I've just finish reading the New 4-WHEEL ATV action (JAN 2004) There is the Ultimate Big 4X4 shootout. I might be wrong but reading that you will have the answer. They're not puting down any bike but bring what the best use for each bike and what the dislike from each bike.

Read that before buying any one of those big bores...

I've had Honda's, Yamaha's, Polaris's Bombardier's sled was always the best machine at the time because it was mine and I was proud but I had lemon's but never admited at the time. Now have a new Prairie 700 and so far no complaint and it's been abused...

Good luck finding the right quad

MTD, the areas that I ride the Prairie just wouldnt cut it!!! Everyone always talks about how "FAST" the Prairie is and not where it can go!!! I beg every Prairie owner to meet me at Tellico ORV area where the speeds are less than 5 mph and involve 90% Rock Crawling 10% mud riding with some nastyyyyyyyy mud holes along trail 13. On any given weekend there are 100's of quads and so many HYBRID jeeps its crazy! 1000's during the Jamborees!! Please come join me in a ride at Tellico where speed plays absolutely nooooo part in the performance of the machine!!!! This is just my opinion and I am not bashing anyones own opinion!!! I am just stating the difference between opinion and fact!!!!!!! Do a search of the Upper Tellico ORV area and look at some of the pics!! You will see what I mean!!!! Don't mistake me for bashing the Prairie, sure it will win in a drag race, but my grizz will go as fast as I need it to! At the same time the trade off to the prairie winning the drag race( which I never do, I have a yfz and MX bikes for that which would make the Prairie 700 seem like a Yamaha Breeze) is that it sacrifices where it can go versus IRS equipped quads!! Again I AM NOT BASHING, only stating fact!!! I would be more than glad to prove my point!!!! If anyone on this forum is familiar with Tellico, they would realize that on any given weekend you would probably see every make and model(except sport quads, they have no place on those trails) of quads out of the trails!!! I have seen my share of flips crashes and getting stuck, but not as much as the non-IRS quads. The prairie is a wonderful machine, but to call it the king of the utilities as most do to me is not really accurate, how can you rate it the king if the only thing it can do is accelerate faster than mine and be the fastest on top end??? Again mine is fast enough as I would like a Utility machine to be!!! If speed is everything, follow me over the 115ft triple jumps at my local MX tracks and we will separate speed from reality!!!! The fact is, the Grizz, Sportsmans, Ac's far surpass the Kawi in that category of riding, the fact is the the Prairie will NOTTTTT follow the IRS Machines on those trails!! But the IRS machines will do anything and everything the Prairie will do, maybe just not as fast!! Ride Hard Ride Safe!!!!

Tellico,

I agree with your assesment of the rock crawling capabilities of the Grizzly. They probably are better than the Prairie. If that's what you use your quad for then you have chosen the perfect quad for you.

However, I ride with a gentleman that has a Grizzly 660 and there are numerous shortcoming with this quad. We ride in river basins and trails. In these applications, your Grizzly is sadly overmatched. Grizzly's have a terrible tendency to stall in deep water. Their ability to transverse high water and mud, even though they have superior ground clearance, is inferior to the Prairie. I will give the Grizzly one accolade: it does rebound well after being completely drowned out. I've had to tow him home (we call it "the tow of shame")several times. The Prairie just doesn't do that, no matter how hard I try.

In trail riding conditions, the Grizzly is very tippy and significantly under powered. It can't come close to staying with a Prairie 700 in any type of trail race, whether it be a flat out drag, roll on race or fast trail riding. The chassis is not good enough to handle the motor in the quad.

The current issue of ATV ACTION(January 2004) seems to agree with me too. The overall winner in the big bore competition is the Prairie 700 because it is the best OVERALL quad made. Your Grizzly could muster only 5th place out of 6 quads. I thought that was a little harsh myself, I would say that overall it's the SECOND best quad. But if rock crawling is your thing, go ahead and get a Grizzly and go to Tellico and justify your purchase with your Grizzly buddies.

I just got the Praire 700, and let me tell you, it is awesome. I haven't ridden the Polaris, but I don't want to either. This bike is so hot, especially for a work bike, and I especially like the differential lock that you can shift on the fly. I don't know of any other bike that offers that feature at this time. Also, I just opened it up for top speed yesterday, and I hit an unbelievable 65 miles and hour on a straightaway, which I have never seen a work bike do before. I would compare the power and torque to my 86 250R...almost.

No need to pull a lever to lock the front on the Polaris, it is true 4wd. And the Gizz 660 had a push button diff lock, no need to HOLD a lever down either. And both engage right away, unlike the Kawi system that may take a few moments to engage the 4wd. And the Grizz and Sportsman all hit around the 60-65 mph range

Lockres if youve never been on the polaris 700 dont ever get on one.youll most likely change your mind about your p700...And 65 on the top end isnt nothing to brag about. And your right polaris dont have a botton to push for a locking rear end its already there....
