Default Do You Wear a Helmet?

{RhinoOffRoad} Obviously you caan't read either.... I RACE motorcycles. I don't run 150mph on the typical streets. Yes.. back country roads, no traffic.. I've cut loose and ripped it, but I've been racing all my life over 35 yrs of racing. I am always in complete control of ANY vehicle I'm in. I operate any vehicle within it's designed abilities, and my abilities with it. I've NEVER had an accident on a public road, never caused an accident or hit anyone else on the track. I run fast, but I run safe. Everyone who has ever raced around with me would tell you they never worry if I'm around them.... I am in no way wreckless or a hypocrite when it comes to safety... my kids would be the first to tell you that! I lead by EXAMPLE!

btw.. your little anology between motorcycles and ATV's doesn't hold water due to the numbers difference. But look at the difference between Harelys and sportbike deaths.... there are 10x more serious injuries and deaths on Cruisers the sportbikes.... why? Safety gear!! Check with your insurance company.. they will tell you the same thing.

SPEED doesn't killl..... STUPIDITY kills!!!

{RhinoOffRoad} you have no clue what your talking about.... I don't IMPOSE anything on anyone but my children. I will state my OPINION, like it or not... and as I said WAY early on.. I do think it's everyones CHOICE, I could care less how you or anyone else rides. But if I saw you, I'd still think the same thing... F#$cking STUPID!!! I NEVER said I wanted a helmet law imposed on anyone, I never said anything about forcing people HAD to follow my thought....

What is it with you and this whole socialist bit?? Geeezzz... As for me riding 150.. actually on the track it's more like 190+ in the straights... but like I said.. I've been trained to do it.. I've been doing it for years.. going fast is kind of the point when your RACING.. you ********!! Grow a brain and then open your mouth when you have an intellegent thought.

Wow did not mean to start a war of words. I was just trying to get an idea if I was taking unecessary risk. I did not consider flying debris in my thoughts on to wear a helmet or not. I think most severe injuries on non-sport quads has to be from the machine rolling on the person. If I was a sport quad rider I would not think twice about gearing up due to the speed. I guess I did not put the utility atv in that same risk category. Accidents can happen so maybe I will look into getting a brain bucket. I will be setting the trend for sure.

{BuckMark} No worries.. it's a good topic.

My experience has been most of the injuries in sport/utility/trail ATV riding is from flying debris, obsticles and coming off the bike. I've seen at least a dozen guys get eye injuries from flying rocks, dirt, pieces of sticks... (OUCH) a buddy of my brothers was riding two bikes in front of me a month ago, and got a piece of stick stuck in the corner of his eye... it got kicked up by the guy in front of him, and it shot between his sunglasses and his face, and jammed right in the corner of his eye. It missed his eyeball by a hair, but still he was bleeding like a stuck pig.... I have a couple of huge dings in my helmet where flying rocks shot into my helmet... not to mention the mud clots constantly on my goggles.... Just read my first post about my sis-in-law... just doing 15mph in the front yard!! She still have a black eye and cut on her face!! another inch higher and she would have been blinded for sure! It's not the speed to worry about... it's everything else. btw.. Ozzy Osborn wasn't going fast when he wrecked his ATV.. in his YARD, and look how banged up he was!!

{RhinoOffRoad} Where do you get it that sportbikes aren't safe?? I've have WAYYYYY more close calls in a car, or truck then I have EVER had on a bike!! Yes, bikes can be dangerous in the hands of a stupid person.. VERY TRUE. It seems to me your CBR proabably scared you, so you think they are dangerous. Poor kiddie, shouldn't play with big toys. LOL
ANY vehicle is dangerous in the hands of stupid people!! Either you control your vehicle, or you don't. Either you practice emergency handling.. (yes, I've had a tire come apart on me.. and it didn't crash!) or you don't! Trust me.. I've seen plenty of freak accidents that kill good drivers.. but my point.. this whole time, is that SMART people.. do their best to prepare for emergencies... that's why we have safety gear. No one expects to crash.. but a smart person knows their abilities, knows their vehicle, practices emergency handling, and is always looking for potential problems. It's called situational awareness.. if you were ever in combat.. you'd know these terms.... and yes... I've been in combat. My sis-in-law didn't expect that limb to come falling out of the tree.. but guess what.. it did, and she got it in the face... had she been wearing her helmet and goggles.. poof.. no problem. It's as simple as that.

On ATvs I wear helmets 99% of the time.Already broke one helmet in a crash. But on the Harley I dont wear one for a simple reason I NEED TO HEAR THAT LITTLE OLD LADY NOT STOPPING AT THAT STOP SIGN. Now on the trails the trees dont move and you are pushing your limits at times so to me it makes sense but I have been on street bikes for over 25 yr and ATVs for over 15 yrs and I am glad that we can make our own choices here in the good old USA

Accidents are called that because they are an event that wasn't planned or avoidable. That is the reason for helmets. To help protect yourself from the unexpected. Granted there are times where you can get away without wearing a helmet, and nothing happens, but that one time that you don't have it on and something does happen, if you are still alive, you will wish you had. Better safe than sorry! Pretty much what atvguy217 said.
