ever since i got that unlocker

i got an unlocker and i noticed i can really haul a$$ up hill in 3rd. even a hill climb full throttle. where be4, or even now, in 4wd no matter what by the top i would be forced to down shift. and i know that now theres more power at the rear now but why couldnt i make it up in 3rd while in 4wd?

engines make their most horsepower at a specified rpm. When in 4wd, your traction is enough to bog you down. When in 2wd, your traction is less (if you had a buddy watch, he'll probably verify that your rear tires are slipping when climbing in 2wd) and thus your motor can maintain your peak rpm/horsepower.
Hope this makes some sense.

I have a rancher with a warn 424 select with 26 inchers and thank god for the unlocker, Those tires really drop the fun level unless your in the mud! Anyways...hes right...did you ever hear of higher rpms eaqual more hp's. Hes right, once you get the engine up to a certian rpm, the real power of it kicks in.. Thats why when your in the mud, you gotta keep it in 2nd gear because the rpm's are peaked out and if you put it in third, the rpms drop and there isnt any power cause the tires are hooking up and needs the lower gear to achieve the higher rpm's. Thats why we can haul @$$ up hill in 2x4, cause you got two tires turning almost freely and arent hooking up and therefore its easier for it to climb certian hills....its kind of hard to explain. And the reason why you gotta down shift or sometimes dump it into a lower gear while going up a hill in 4x4 is cause the tires arent spinning, there hooking up and need more juice to get you up the hill.
