28 589 IPT are very good and I might consider them to be the best in the snow next to the trax.

Most have better results by turning the direction of rotation 180 degrees

You may want to try the Maxxis Bighorn Radials. They work well in snow.

I have 26" Mudlites on my Prairie 650, and 27" Mudlites on my wife's Vinson. I can only compare them w/ the stock Dunlops, but they are much better in the snow. So far, I have found them to be an excellent all around tire. IMO

In Canada, some guys I know did a little test of their own and the mudlites came out on top. Aggressive enough for traction but not to aggressive to dig you deep consistantly. I have a set of 589m/s myself and do not use them in the winter. My stock tires outperform them considerably. I have a Rincon and run a set of brandnew tires. The 589's a fine until the snow is a foot deep because once you have deep snow, the slightest setback will make you spin and the 589's will bury you 9 times out of 10. Plus the weight of these tires affects performance dramatically, If your tires are to aggressive, ie ITP 589m/s, you dig to fast and bottom out quicker. Also the sidewalls on heavy tires like the 589 have know flex, even when running them without air. Flex is alway good because it gives you a larger contact patch. Also the mudlites have a very soft rubber compound. Rocks will tear them up fast but in snow they give you better traction when it gets slippery, such as on ice. Soft rubber also stays more pliable in the cold. Those seem like the best choice for utility bikes. As far as sport bikes, the old ProWedge available from Honda is by far the best. Soft rubber compound, soft sidewalls, and just enough bite. There is also the "4 snow" tire that is very similar in design. Their soft sides allow the tire to "blow up" when spinning giving you more ground clearance and deeper traction. Unfortunately they have no comparable tires for utility bikes.

“News flash, the ITP Holeshot ATR tires give extremely good traction in the ice/snow conditions! …it was unbelievable how much traction we had. This is a superior combination.” —ATV Connection
