Port and Polish...
#1
Hey i have an 01 wolverine (mods are listed bellow) and i was just wondering what i could expect from getting it ported and polished. Is it worth it? Where would the gains be?
I moslty trail ride but i ride hard and fast. Just wondering if its a good idea or not because i know someone who will do it for a good price thanks

The power in a 4 stroke comes from the head. Flow equals power but you can go over board and make it a "lazy " head, meaning if the port is too big the fuel will drop out of the air stream and you will lose power.
All you want to do is clean up the port casting flaws, have it "pocket ported" ( the area right behind the valve) have the valve guide streamlined and a good multi angle valve job.
Finding some one that can do it RIGHT can be a long search. Just hogging it out will not get you anywere.

I agree, unless this person has a flow bench and years of experience I wouldn't let them remove material.
Polishing the intake and head, then matching them and a good 3 angle valve job will be a big help. The inside of those ports are pretty rough and the intake is not matched very well.
With that being said you should really put a cam and piston in it as long as your tearing it apart that far, to get the most out of it.
I just did a lot of engine work to a friends Wolv. (stock bore & stroke) and it got 18 hp on the dyno at the wheels. It may not sound like a lot but it's a 30 % increase over stock.
If you can't afford to do the cam & piston I wouldn't tear it apart. Port & polish is the icing on the cake, you need to make the cake first. HTH
