Rear Seat/Storage
#1
Hi All,
I'm thinking about getting an addon seat (for rear rack)- a friend has one made by Kimpex that he seems to be happy with. Can anyone let me know some more companies that make them and any experiences you may have with them (i.e. quality, price etc)
Thanks in advance

I looked at a lot of seat/boxes before I bought mine. The trouble I had was finding a dealer that actually had these things. The websites and catalog pictures just don't quite cut it. You can't tell if something is flimsy from a picture. I wanted to be able to actually put the thing on a quad exactly like mine to see how it would fit.
I looked at boxes from Choko, Moose, Motovan, and Tamarack.
Of the boxes I listed, the Choko was the only one I didn't get to touch. It's not actually a "seat" - just a backrest, but it looks high quality. I would keep an eye out for more ATV products from those guys - they are already well established in the snowmobile world.
The Moose is interesting, but it is not comfortable, fits oddly, and intrudes too much on the driver's space.
The Motovan seemed nice, but I didn't like the way the lids opened up from the front and I thought the handles seemed cheap.
There was another one that I can't remember the brand at the momment.... it had rope handles and seemed really cheap.
I liked the tamarack. It seemed high quality, but the lack of handles and the (imo) ackward look of the thing disqualifed it.
I finally decided that the Kimpex offered the best fit and the best quality. Plus, it has a very comfortable seat. I added some much needed weather stripping to the lids. The only complaint I have is that the locks seem weak. They haven't failed, but I do expect them to.

This is the Tamarck trunk we have. null
We ride double and my wife does not like sitting higher in another seat. She says the others feel unstable to her. We ride in a lot of mountains in all kind of terrain including off camber angles.
She would rather sit on the ATV’s seat and not something that puts her up higher. I also like her weight being lower and closer to the front for climbing steep inclines.
The wrap around also has tons of storage which we use every bit of. Not having handles has never been an issue.

Tamarack makes a really nice box. I saw the full line at the ATV Expo in Louisville last fall. Do you use Tamarack's quick release system or U-bolts to attach the box? I think U-Bolts are probably the most secure, but on my Rubi, the plastic is so close to the rack, it's dang near imposible to get the thing on there.
I would love to find an easy way to securely attach and detach a box. Anyone?

Just to throw the wet rag.....the reason dealers don't carry them is that most quads are not set-up for 2 up riding, and the liability to the dealer when someone got hurt "mis-using" the quad with something purchased from an authorized dealer would be very high. There are a couple of quads engineered for 2 up riding. The suspension loading for 2 up riding will only be correct if your passenger and the seat arrangement are all within the rear rack capacity, which is pretty small on most. If you really need to do a lot of 2 up riding I would recommend getting a quad rated for it...also check your state regulations, there are some states which prohibit 2 up riding even if the quad is rated for it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I find it funny about the addon seats, my bike's back rack is rated for 200 lbs. I know the seat and my wife would not equal that. What is the maximum weight for a driver on an ATV??? (you know where I'm going with this) - I do understand the manufacturers reasoning for "rating" a rack due to weight distribution, but I also know people that are 2.5 times my weight that ride smaller ATV's then I have. Seems like there is a lot of gray areas in the weight distribution on a four wheeler.
I heard from some guys at work that the OPP (local police force) near sharbot lake were giving them a hard time about their addon seats, even when they didn't have passengers in them - what gives?? Anyways thanks once again for the information - I'll check out the manufacturers you all suggested.
Cheers
