With this type of question, anyone that tells you to choose a specific model is a pud knocker. Your friend has to do some research, that's part of the learning experience. There are a lot of things to consider. Independant rear suspension versus a solid rear axle. Full time 4x4 or selectable 4x4. Locking front differential. Chain or belt drive.
The most versatile quad is one that has selectable 2 to 4 wheele drive, a locking front differential AND high and low gears. IRS gives a smoother ride than a solid rear axle but can SEEM a little tippy if you haven't ridden one before. I don't know how many quads have all these features, but I know the Kodiak 450 does.

If your Bro is a dirtbike rider I would go out on a limb and say he likes to go fast. If you want a real fast 4x4 quad you will want a bigger 650cc+ quad. I would also think he would want an IRS quad due to his injruy. Even though it's not as sporty of a ride as the SRA it by far gives you a smoother rider whether you are riding fast or slow. I hate to name quads like Starky has stated but I will say he might want to stay away from Polaris. Not because they are not good quads but because they are heavier than most and may be harder to throw around on the trails. They also have a wider seat area that could be uncomfortable to someone with an injury like your brothers.
Most of the new quads today are pretty good. The best thing to do is get out there and test ride them and choose the best for you (your brother). Good luck and happy trails.
