You would be amazed that if you look around hard enough that you can get free magazine subscriptions. A couple of years ago I got a years worth of guns and ammo free with a coupon. I've got a couple of more technical publications free by filling out survey cards and the like. I was getting popular mechanics for free for several years. This year was the first time I've paid for it in probably 10 years or more. Most mags you can get with a heavy discount too. Under a buck or two an an issue. I probably have 10 or 12 periodicals coming to the house every month and I probably didn't pay for half of them.
In fact:
For the price a slurpee, a bag of beef jerky and a magazine of your choice at the local 7-11 ($9.97) you can get a full 12 issues of "Quad" magazine.

If you look around on the net hard enough you could probably find a way to get that one gratis but I'm not gonna do all the work for ya.
If you are really cheap start checking out the local garage and yard sales. When I was a kid I got a wagon full of field and streams dating back to the 50s for a buck. Not a dollar a piece but a buck for for 30 years worth of F&S. Took me several trips with my wagon but I dragged them all home much to my mom's annoyance. Also watch for any spring or fall "clean up" times your town may have. All sorts possibilities there. Offer to clean out somebody's garage if you know they have a bunch of old magazines laying around. I got a bunch of hot rod mags by doing that once. (and scored a bunch of nudie books much to my 10 year old delight)
