smokey kodiak
#1
i have an 03 kodiak 400. The last couple of rides i have been on it has been burning oil. I went ahead and ordered a set of rings for it and the service manual. I took it apart while i wait for the parts. The rings and cylinder wall dont look to bad but it is probobly due for honing and rings. Is there anything else that will cause it to smoke/ burn oil?Should i change the valve seals? It didnt really smoke while it was idling only when i gave it some gas and even more when it was on a strain. I ran fine the whole time though

An over filled crankcase after an oil change could do that, or an air filter oiled with the wrong type oil.
Did you do a compression test before disassembly? If your rings were bad it would show up on the compression.
Was the smoke blue and persistant, or did it disapate quickly? You could be seeing signs of an over rich carb too...choke stuck, loose jet, plugged air filter.
Let us know what you find.

i didnt do a compression test i didnt think about it until after. The smoke was bluish and as long as i was on the throttle it was smoking. It was definetly oil burning as the oil level would go down after a few hours of riding and it smelled like burning oil. It didnt start from an oil change or filter cleaning. It started smoking a while ago a very little bit and now its just to the point were i wont put up with it.

My brother in law had a Suzuki 230 and it was fun to ride but burned the oil and man did it make a smoke cloud!! Well we decided to just change the rings and wow it doesn't even smoke at all any more. Worked for us
