You can use an old CD or DVD for a signaling mirror! I also carry a whistle and chemlites!

Flare gun........Great for signalling of coure and could serve as a means of defense I'm sure as a last resort.

Default Utility Riders: What do you take?

This is a great thread.

The following are always in my ATV's front rack/box:

Folding Shovel
Rope
Multi-Tool
Tool roll w/spare plug and basic hand tools

For a ride of more than an hour or so:

At least 1 liter of water for every two hours I expect to be riding, usually more since I carry water for my son
1 gal of extra fuel
Snacks like jerky and granola bars
1 liter of Gatorade
Trail map and compass
GPS receiver w/trail head marked
Spare batteries
LED flashlight
Tow strap
1st aid kit
Rain poncho
Digital camera

I usually put the extra kit in a dry bag and carry it in the back rack next to the gas can. It seems like a lot of stuff, but my machine hauls it like it's nothing and it doesn't get in the way of riding.

That's my $.02.

I have to admit that I almost always only carry my wallet, cell phone, and maybe a jacket. Where I ride it is rarely more than about 15 miles to the nearest gas station, or two miles to the nearest house or road. Of course, where I ride it is legal to ride from town to town. I often park right in front of the bank. I also have tons of relatives up there that can come to get me if needed.

I all ways take a tire kit, snacks & some water. Tire kit includes pump. Also take a light rain jacket and spare gloves. GPS, flashlight, compass, cell phone if appl., and extra warm clothes if it is cold! Most of all, I always pray before each ride, and thank god for the oppertunity and to be blessed with a safe ride! I always take, 2 tow straps, duct tape, electrical tape, an assortment of hand tools, wd-40, ether, a lighter or two, tire patch kit, air transfer hose, small first aid kit, shackles, water, insurance cards, cell phone, and last but not least, my digital camera to capture all of the adventure for memories.
