Funny. I had a Kodiak. I loved that little thing. Problem was it was a 2x4 and that just won't cut it in my part of the country. This is a ironic thread because I was stuck for like three or four hours on a EXTREMELY small trail (I have a 06 800 Polaris). Granted, no bike was going to make it on this trail. I don't care if it was a Rancher or a Kodiak. Nothing short of a 2 wheeler would. It just got to be impossible. We wound up having to turn around and go back out. Trails of this nature frankly aren't much fun anyway. But in spots like this, a inch makes a huge difference. A inch in height or width.

The Suzuki Eiger is a good one for tight trails and it has more zip than the rancher, best bang for the buck in my eyes.

A Rancher 350 is 45.0 in wide compared to only 43.0 in wide for a Kodiak 450. The Rancher has 24 in tires compared to 25 in on Kodiak. My guess is- based strictly on the specs- that a decent rider on a Kodiak will go places that the same rider on a Rancher will be crying Uncle. The Rancher light weight of 524 lbs may help but not much when the Kodiak is only 591 lb.

i dunno how it is in other states, but on public land here, the width limit on atv trails is 50", and the trails are constructed so a 50" wide atv will fit (in theory). so a trail where a tiny atv will fit and a larger one will not will not happen. there are times, tho where a large one will take a little finess, but some obstacals are easier for a larger atv, too. so it's a toss-up. i spent a lot of years riding a tiny atv, and i can take my Brute just about everywhere the little one went. i'll always prefer the brute to the quadrunner now.

Personally, I would rather slow down and take a little more time threading through the trees, than ride any narrow tippy machine. I find my buddies Kodiak to be a little tippy, and I have widened my Rancher +4" (wider tires and greater offset rims) for a bit more lateral stability.

Dirt bikers hate us because our machines widen the trails. 50" is standard for constructed trails in this state. But, I am begining to hate Rhinos, becasue they widen the trails even further!
