I haven't tried attaching the rope to the cable but I doubt there would be an advantage to doing that. With the full 50' of cable on the drum it will tend to ball up which will create problems. The intended use is to pull off the cable and put on the short section of rope.
For me that isn't a problem because I run two winches, one for snowplowing, the other for winching if needed. My snowplow winch is mounted to my down pressure system which takes less than a minute to remove. The other winch is mounted using the Warn Multi Mount system which takes less than a minute to mount so it isn't a big deal to change.
Basically I have setup my atv to be the swiss army knife of atv's. I can attach or remove attachments in a matter of moments to setup the atv for what I want to do that moment. My pictures will give you an idea of what I mean.

I always thought it would be a great idea if they made a winch with some kind of clutch setting like a cordless drill. When plowing you only need to pick 100# or so, so why don't they make a winch with a..........................say 400# stop or clutch or something, that way you don't put all 2500# of tension on that cable all the time.
Oh and to answer the original ?, just keep using your cable, I snap mine about twice a winter. I just lose about 2 ft of cable, retie and keep going. I think my winch cable is about 40 ft. now instead of 50 ft., big deal.
