Thought on Montana Jack Mounting System After Field Testing
#1
I've had Montana Jack's winch multi mount system on my atv for a while. It is very rugged and well built. However, after much testing I've decided to remove the front mount. This past Sunday, when out riding, I busted my Warn. The winch went between two small trees as I began to back up, catching on one of them, breaking the motor off. This is not Montana Jack's fault but I am writing this for the benefit of anyone who is considering purchasing the mounting system.
I've tried to be very careful since I've installed it but it was not enough. If one rides where there are not a lot of trees, perhaps in the desert, it would be perfect. Removing the winch and utilizing the front or rear hitches is very easy. the quick connects function flawlessly even when wet and muddy. The mounting system is the most secure winch mount I've ever seen. It is very rugged and firmly installs to the ATV's frame. I just don't think it is well suited to swamp and woods riding, my main playground. One alternative I considered in lieu of removing it, was mounting a box to my rack and storing the winch in it until needed. This would protect the winch even more than if it was mounted all the time. I just don't want to have to hook it up every time I need it. The rear hitch will still be utilized as a tow point or assessory system. The rear makes for an excellent location to mount the winch contactor, as well.
I'm bummed because it didn't work out for me the way I wanted it to, but I felt I may be able to help someone who may be considering purchasing one. Like I said, for some folks it will work very well but if you ride around trees, it may not be your best answer. If anyone has any questions about the mounting system, please feel free to ask.
