Default Winch - Cable vs Synthetic Rope

I have a 2500 Warn Winch on my quad (Grizzly 660) right now. It has the steel cable. I dont know if I just have bad luck, but I have snapped the cable like 3 times already, between plowing and trying to pull myself out of mud.

I am thinking of switching to an Amsteel Synthetic Rope. Anyone have any thoughts on cable vs. synthetic rope?

I have a winch that has the steel cable and has never broke. Maybe you got a bad cable.

As far as synthetic rope vs. steel cable, I have always heard good things about the synthetic rope. I hear it is stronger, and it doesn't fray so no more splinters.

I used to run steel cable. I went through 3 of them and then finally switched to the synthetic. The synthetic seems to be holding up good and have no problems with breaking. I even run a plow and bucket all year round

rope all the way. no more kinks or cut fingers. its a little harder to free spool because of the friction but its worth it. hasn't broke on me yet.

I love teh synetic but I can't believe you are breaking your steel cable. Was it really old? It it getting kinked or? Is it all frayed?

I think they make little synthetic extensions for plowing. I assume they prevent the steel cable from being repeatedly flexed in the same spot while raising and lowering the blade.

Anyhow, I prefer synthetic. It doesn't seem to tangle as bad, it is lighter, it doesn't get hand slicing burs, and I think it might be slightly less dangerous if you were to snap it. On the other hand, if the winch line is against an edge, like a rock or something, it will need protected from that.

Also you will want to run a boat trailer roller or winch saver and new rollers, as burs on the fairlhead would mess up synthetic cable.

my warn winch came with about a 2 ft sheath (i guess you can call it) it slides on the rope so if there is a place you are using your winch and the rope drags on the rocks you slide this sheath down and it wont alow the rock to cut your rope. i also slide it all the way down by the hook when i plow and when i raise and lower it, the rope wont frey with this sheath/cover piece on it. hard to explain hopefully you guys get what im talkin about.

Yeah, my Warn came with that, too.

Kind of a sewn sleeve that you can use to protect the synthetic cable if you have to pull with the line tight against something that might cut or frey it...
