Default hitting mud holes/shifting

ok... I am still new at riding and I have the 2012 Suzuki King Quad 400 FSI. I am terrible with shifting and need to know what I should be doing when hitting mud holes. Also what gear should I be in per my speed? it is a 5 speed. Really any information would be great, I dont want to look like an idiot and I really dont want to ruin my transmision. Thanks All!

In very shallow just give it gas to skim it at a good speed in a higher gear. In deeper you want to keep it in a lower gear so your tires can keep spinning and spitting the mud out of the tread. By high I would say 3rd gear in this case. Low would be 1st and 2nd.
