Check battery connections first then use a meter to see what voltage is at the battery at an idle then increase rpm and see if it drops. If it does could be an ecm module going out if you have the carb model or a regulator if you have the efi model. Plus could be the battery itself may not be able to hold a charge if it has a dead cell even if it's charging over 14 volts. A load test can confirm if the battery is good or not if you have any doubts about it.

Next thing would be the charge coil from the stator itself if the ecm didn't help. You can do a general resistance test on the yellow wires from the stator between each other. Should be a small amount of resistance between each other plus no yellow should short to ground, but the best test is the ac voltage test specs from the manual to see if the stator needs replacing.2008 Polaris Sportsman 500 Service Manual PDF Download

IF you're sure about the stator and you replaced the ecm, then it's possible you could have a bad ecm straight out of the box. I've replaced multiple ones on the same machines, but granted not one that didn't at least work for a little while. That's about all I'm down to unless you have a faulty harness connector like one person posted about recently.

Harness connector, forgot exactly where, but a pin had pushed back or something of that nature and not making good contact. Used a place similar to this one.Motorsport Regulator, Rectifier Connectors - Corsa Technic
