Shelton Fairgrounds or Bear's place, those two are the best for learning. Most of the other places are like Rock Candy, techincal in some areas and rough and tumble in others. If you ride the logging roads at Capitol Forest, there are many farily tame, flat, side trails ( like the one you guys went on after we split up yesterday to get back to the logging road) that can be taken, you just have to know where they are.

There are many small unkept roads that lead to the powerlines that are very rideable and for some riders, could be considered a trail. There's also the old roads that lead to the point where they setup the yarders, these are not maintained with some growth on them and fun to ride on, they all end up at a dead end.

Before I started riding the real trails, I rode the logging roads and these "Fingers", as we called them, simply because they're old short roads off the main roads that dead end, reminded us of fingers of a hand. We used the term, lets hit some fingers, no traffic on those and many are a blast to ride on.

 

Thanks Hap, those fingers sound like just the ticket. Is it allowable to take a pickup and camper out the logging roads and dry camp in the forest area? Also, how much traffic is normal on the logging roads in general?

 

tencubed, I would be willing to show you around the Shelton fairgrounds, for you to see if they are gonna work for you to teach your wife. I also have a large area near my house that includes good logging roads, abondoned logging roads, skidder trails and quad trails. All behind gates. I used both to teach my wife on. You could test ride during the week and then bring your wife out on the weekend and if my wife isn't working she will go too. Let me know when you would like to go to either or oth places.

Thanks for the offer Bear, sounds like the kind of areas that would work well. The basic learning sessions would be at the farm like I said but I think a wooded area would be a lot more fun. We have access to mountain pasture but the terrain is not rider friendly what with limbs and rocks and such. Very few roads. Linda works all weekends at the present time but this may change mid summer or so depending on how accute the nurse shortage stays. It will be a few weeks before we will even have a chance to ride at the farm and probably mid July before we will be bringing the little quad to this side of the hill due to prior commitments. Meantime I will have the 360 over here and am looking forward to being able to exercise it. You missed a good time Saturday, too bad you had quad problems.

 

Well, week days are no problem either. I'm retired, on disability and the wife works 24 on and 48 off, so she is free during the week a lot of the time too, but I ride without here a lot too. We ride Shelton, and Capitol Forest a lot, besides locally. We also ride in central Oregon alot. In fact we are leaving the 17th of May for a five day ride in the East Fort Rock OHV area, southeast of Bend. The offer is on the table for ever how long you need it to be. BTW, The wife only learned to ride since Nov. of 2004 when we bought out second machine and she wouldn't let me trade in the 250. If you want to ride sometime, just contact me. I usually ride at least once a week once the weather improves. I have opted to pass on the bad weather rides as I have time to ride during the week with good weather and fewer people out there on the trails.

 

Just giving you a hard time. Its the least I can do. I could care less how long or where I ride. As long as I am riding. When I got the migrain towards the end is where my spirits started to dwindle. It was more along the lines of I need to take a nap. Hell, minus the migrain and my little mishap on the hill, I would have done it again today!

 

I would be very interested in some weekday and/or weekend rides. Linda is off Tues, Wed and Thurs and I take the dog to visit at the facility where she works Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning. I get home about 6:30 AM Saturday so have the rest of the day and the remainder of the week to play. Ain't retirement great? [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]
