Default Puget Sound/Seattle/Northwest Area Riders Meet HERE!!!

Wild speculation aside, from the DOL Commercial Driver Guide.

Those rigs would require a CDL and a K endorsement, air brake endorsement.

However: There is a short list of exemptions which include some stuff for farmers, firefighters/law enforcement and military that have several restrictions. Then there is the RV exemption. It says, and I quote:

RECREATION VEHICLE OPERATORS are exempted when driving RVs for non-commercial purposes which include:
- Two axle rental trucks; and
- Horse trailers.

From this I gather as long as you can get a drivers license and crawl into the seat you can drive any RV you want as well as a twin screw dump truck you are camping out of even if it is a rental. Apparently horse trailers are considered to be RVs as well.

So, TNE, I was dead wrong in my answer to you. As long as those rigs were strictly RVs you would not need any type of CDL or endorsement to drive them. Even an old f>rt with the reaction time of a sloth and eyes that are weakening with age like me could get in one of those and come hurtling down the hi-way at you and your kids.

Kind of scary isn't it?

Thanks BigD for pursuing this.

Funny thing, I read in a RV site, guys were talking about needing a cdl for over 26,000lbs, hummmm, guess I'll dig up the topic they were talking about, or atleast see what they were questioning.

You need a 16' aluminum trailer with an aluminum top... Just so happens that I know where you can get a 16' aluminum trailer .

Mike I've had a (1st) combination license, NOW CDL class A With endorsements license for 30 years..............

It doesn't matter RV's are RV's. Commercial vehicles are commercial vehicles.

I wish you where right cause some of the big bad EXPENCIVE motor home with air brakes should know the laws that govern CDL drivers and with that said MAYBE our Hiways would be just that much safer........ BUT again what do I know
Well, quite obviously you know the regulations pertaining to the CDL and endorsement requirements. Now, we have this little question about nuclearastronumerologicalphysicpsycobabblequadfrom helow that needs to be answered. I will say that the new RV has a much bigger feel to it, width wise. Even though they're both the same width. I prefer to do the required truck speed limit in this one. Those class A motorhomes don't have any protection for the front seat occupants, it's just a layer of fiberglass between you and the guy in front of you.
