I believe that Happa was talking about an extended hitch on the trailer, not an extension on the receiver/motorhome. So actually the longer the hitch tongue on the trailer, the lighter the tongue.

Yup, if you have a longer hitch extension on the motor home each pound you add at the ball will be more on the axle than with a short extension. Just like a lever used to pick something up. The longer the lever the more a given weight at the end of it can move. When you go to weigh your empty rig put just the rear axle on the scale and weigh it. Then stand on the rear hitch and see what the axle weighs. Take this axle weight difference and divide it by your weight and you have the ratio of weight added to the hitch vs weight added to the rear axle.

Huh? So longer tongue equal more hitch weight which transfer to rear axle of MH?
Originally posted by: tencubed Never towed with a small motor home but remember the longer the set back to the hitch from the center of the rear axle the longer the lever arm and the more weight moved to the rear axle when trailer tongue weight is added.

Ahh, I misunderstood. Still a good idea to get the hitch to axle ratio none the less.
Lengthening the tongue on a trailer will make no difference in the tongue weight on the hitch would it? If the trailer and load weighs say 3000 lbs and you want 10% on the hitch it would still be 300 lbs. What it would do is make the trailer want to track further inside on corners and, in most cases, easier to back up.
Happa is right wanting the tongue long enough to be able to make sharp turns and avoid jackknifes.

It's all about leverage. The longer the tongue, the easier it is to pick up the tongue, hence less tongue weight.

Same effect though if you have a longer tounge on the trailer it would still be heavier on the Axle of the MH. A shorter tounge would put more weight on the trailer tires

Good Morning PSAR. MB, how does Sunday look for you. Jenna and I could probably come up then. Let me know.

Here is your trailer lesson.. with equal load in the trailer the longer tounge requires less work (input force from motorhome) to hold up the same load. so the front tires stay on the ground more.
