I know it's quite a ways from ya'll, but here they changed the tax laws on selling a car/truck. Used to be, they only taxed the amount
you sold the vehicle for. Say you had a truck worth 5000, but sold it to a friend and told the tax office you sold it for 500. Old way you
would have paid taxes on 500 dollars. New way, even if you did only pay 500 dollars, you are responsible for taxes on a vehicle worth
5000 dollars.

They changed the law here to the same thing about 4(?) years ago. However, you can, with a bill of sale, claim diminished value, sign a paper stating basically why it's diminished, mechanical issues, body damage, it's a parts vehicle/quads, etc and pay taxes on only what you paid for the vehicle. Since the state's estimation of what a vehicle is worth is considerably different from what I can sell it for or what I pay for it, I rarely just let them make the decision on what they want to charge me. Haven't had any trouble yet.
If a licensing agent starts giving me a problem, I take my paperwork and go elsewhere. I have the least hassle and the most help with the process in just going to the county auditor office directly.
