Never had a problem, of course the 3300 pund dry weight camper in the truck bed may have had some thing to do with the adequate traction I always had.
Id also bet your race boats weighed a hell of allot less than bings boat..

One Fly I agree with you as far as your statement goes. If the load on the trailer is left in the exact same place a longer tongue will make it easier to pick the tongue up. This means the weight on the tongue has been reduced hence less effort to lift it. However, IF you are wanting to maintain a 10% of total trailer weight on the tongue to have a trailer that does not want to "duck walk" or have other bad handling habits you will have to move the load forward on the trailer. If the trailer and load weigh 3000 lbs and you want 10% on the tongue that means the tongue must weigh 300 lbs. Less or more will not be 10% of the total 3000 pounds of gross trailer weight. A longer tongue will give a longer moment of angle in relation to the axles as a shorter tongue will have a shorter MOA. This will affect the initial energy required to start and stop the vertical movement and will also affect the impact weight when braking, accelerating and going over uneven roadways. A longer tongue will give the feeling of being moved up and down by the trailer more than a shorter tongue. These impact forces are such that, unless you hit one heck of a dip or such, they will be negligible and short lived in nature and have a very limited effect on the suspension system as a whole. Also, it should be mentioned that an overly long trailer tongue will also allow a tail heavy trailer, less than 10% hitch weight, to duck walk and sway way more than a trailer with a short tongue.

As far as the front tires leaving the ground due to hitch weight. Well, if you have a motor home loaded that heavy in the tail and that much tongue weight from a trailer you better move some of those fish up to the passenger seat.

All this being said.. A gooseneck or 5th wheel will tow better than a bumber pull anyday of the week
