I just went to Silver Lake yesterday, Friday, and got in no problem. But that is typical for a weekday. I left at about 5:45 and intended to get a parking voucher for Saturday on my way home. When I got to the station where they hand out the vouchers, I was blown away by how long the line was! It was 6:00 staight up and there must have been 180 vehicles in line already. I just turned around and went home.

Today I'm mounting a flag on my 4X4 and buying an ORV sticker for it. I'll get in without delay if I'm "dune ready" and can unload my ATV in the dunes. I don't like running my truck in the sand but figure that it's my part to help the situation. There are plenty of people pulling trailers that must use the parking lot. I think it's great that so many people come from out of state to use the dunes. I would feel guilty if I knew that my parking in the lot kept some who came a long ways from getting in.

My advice to anyone coming for the weekend, that needs the parking lot- make absolutely sure you are there Friday night and in line at 5:30!

I was at the Dunes all last week and came across a petition at David Allen Racing that was being circulated by some of the area business owners. Apparently there is a proposal for the 2001 season to have people call in to "reserve" a voucher before they can actually go pick it up. The business owners are opposed to this proposal.

Excellent idea about those of us with 4x4's parking inside leaving more room for others. I parked the '99 SuperDuty on the beach all week. Of course this could lead to having to get a voucher to park on the beach...

Personally, i think the voucher system works pretty well, i have been up on both holidays and have not waited in line longer than 15 minutes, what is wrong with that?? Hasn't anybody else waited inline for 8 hours or more on a holiday weekend?? I have, and it sucks. If i get up there the night before, pick up a voucher that syas i can get in at 1:00, and not wait in line, i don't have any problems sleeping off the hangover for a while longer in the tent. It sure beats sleeping in line. Furthermore, if you are worried about getting a parking lot voucher, do what i do and throw whatever your riding in the back of a truck and unload it in the dunes. This also saves on the hassle of driving back out to the parking lot every time you want a drink or need gas. i personally have dragged myself out of the tent, aftger being up partying all night at 5:30 in the morning to make it to the line before it moves at 6, i think the voucher's are a good idea.
