But riding is riding and it's a shorter drive

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Miami is one of those places that you have to go with someone who's ridden the place. The lack of maintenance really took it's toll. By the end of '06 it's going to be like a completely new park. It's so spread out and the maps can be less than helpful at times.

I'm dressed for the weather and about ready to spontaneously combust. Next to load the bike, hit the gas station, then a store to get that Xmas present, LOL, then I'm off on the road up the hill. Be in Oakhurst about (9:30 (or earlier) or so if all goes fine.)

* Can't get the quote thingy to work this a.m.:

Hmmmm.... what other place "requires" (my choice of word there!) you to have to go with someone who's ridden the place before?

Pismo - no. Hollister - no. Jawbone - no. Gorman - no. Carnegie - no. Sand Mountian - no. Point being this: if the place is that good or that much fun, why would it be necessary to go with someone who's ridden there before? A good sized group of us all tried Miami for the first time and found it to be miserable in every sense of the word. The riders all had various levels of riding skills; some were new riders, others were long term experienced riders. The mere enjoyment of the day turned out to be the lunch and conversation that was shared.

I've ridden Pismo since the early 80s. Richard had ridden Sand Mountain for a long time when he lived in Northern California. We were newbies to Hollister, Jawbone and Gorman in '03. We simply decided to go and explore and had a blast. We were able to explore for days at a time and never be bored or miserable. Since that time, we have returned to each place multiple times and continue to explore and have fun!

Travelling time? Not really that much of a consideration when we know that we are going to have fun!

If Miami is simply a place for technical trail riding - and you need a guide - we don't really find that to be fun riding. Fun riding is a time where you are able to just get out and ride, spend time with friends, let your mind go, enjoy the surroundings, explore new terrains and be able to relax while out & about.

Just my .02!

I guess you have a slight point if you like to ride easy stuff. You need a guide in the sense of telling you where to go, which trails are best to start out on. The reason for this is that the lack of previous trail maintence allowed the trails to become serverely degraded. All of the SVRAs are actively maintained by Parks. Just jumping on any old trail can get you in a very precarious position. Especially with varying degrees of rider abilities.

Not challenge yourself. Sorry, but sand riding, it's just a horsepower (and suspension for the whoops) game. Anyone can point and pull the trigger. The bike is going to pretty much go where you point it.

Learning to technical trail ride will make you a better rider. Clutch work (if you have one). Ballance. Body position.

Rocks. Ruts. Tree limbs. Trees. Puddles. You name it, Miami will throw it out there.

And nothing out there beats cruising through the forest with the smell of the pines.

I have been to Miami twice now, both times I have had a blast Every rider, rides for various reasons I think, as long as your riding that is great for the sport My daughter was introduced to technical riding today for the first time and she enjoyed the challenge. She can't wait to do it again. I don't think you need someone to show you around Miami, but, it definately would be helpful. It's not like Pismo or Carniegie or Hollister, where you can follow the fence line back to civilization The learning curve there, would be longer.

Yea that was some strange stuff falling form the sky as soon as we hit the highway, it had cleared up That one cloud must of just been spinning around right over where we parked

Our bikes are still dirty We'll wash them off tomorrow, after we're done moving some Carnegie mud around
