It can get pretty darn cold there in the afternoons/evenings, so be sure to bring lots of warm clothing and hopefully you have an RV to stay in instead of a tent as it also gets windy. Every time we've been there, no matter what month it is, in the afternoons/evenings we always get blown out and can't even get out of the RV because you get totally sandblasted outside. Also, everything outside gets buried with sand in around 10 minutes. We had to leave early because of the wind last time. It's usually pretty nice during the day though - it's great being able to camp right next to the water on the beach. I'd prefer to go next time when it's not so crowded though. Every time we've gone it's absolutely crazy - WAY too many people. You take your life in your hands just trying to cross the 100 ft. area to the water - it's like a freeway during rush-hour with quads, bikes, sandrails, 4x4s, etc.

Riding is making it sound really bad, it isn't. The Windy time are only April/May. The rest of the year is nice. Evening can get pretty cool. Jeans and a sweatshirt are all that's needed then. The creek crossing in only bad in the winter and around a storm time when they release water up the creek. That's why you go at Low Tide. Of course any specific weather pattern can change things. On shore air flows are cold (coming off the Pacific.)

MD: So were you up around Groveland Ranger Dist./Greeley Hill? That's where I did the Poker Run last year.

We must have just been unknowingly picking especially bad weekends to go. We're reluctant to go back because it's been so bad. One time we didn't know there was some kind of Portugese festival going on near there so it was especially crazy. We'll have to give it another try.

Very little traffic at Pismo from 2nd week of sept to easter. Weekends may get a little crowded not as bad as the summer time. If you want to camp tent you can stay at one of the campgrounds, north beach in pismo and oceano at the beach access ramp, with your camping fee you get out on the beach free. As for the wind it is not that bad. Everytime I go the wind doesn't really bother me. If it is blowing put on your goggles and ride. No big deal whats a little sand hurtn anybody. I will admit though I went to Pismo the first weekend in august. Never again there were somany people. They have no where else to ride because it is so damn hot everywhere else. I remember years ago I could go any weekend and ride and there would be no problems. It was just freaking ridiculous in aug. But then I went at the end of sept first of october there was no one there. And Mrs. Folks no wind.... I rode in shorts and a jersey. I guess it really depends on when you go. Now everyone can go to glamis ocitillo wells and ect. so pismo is almost a ghost town except for friday night and sats.

B&W, We were a little higher, up by Evergreen Road but, on both sides of Hwy 120. Some beautiful country

Ridin, we go to Pismo 4-6 times a year Only bad time we have gone is April/May, like what's already been said, the wind is horrendous The Portuguese Festival is in Aug. we went during that time 3 years ago. I didn't think it was that bad. Others we were with, did. Guess to each his own. When we camp, we mark off our camp site, which cuts down on idiots riding through camp at a high rate of speed. Also, when we are out riding, we stay away from the "large crowds". If they happen to ride upon us, we stop riding until they get bored with the area or we just move on.
For the most part, the weather there is great compared to the San Jouquin Valley
Crossing the creek, you do need to check the tide schedule when going on the beach and when leaving.
During the day, I'm usually in shorts and long sleeve t-shirt At night, jeans and more of a wind breaker type jacket It can get chilly, but, hey, your on the coast and it's still warmer then San Francisco

I have been making the trip to Pismo once a month for the last year, I find it the most fun when it is crowded you see a lot of fast stuff out at the drag strip and comp hill or I should say bump. I find when the wind is blowing the sand is in the best shape , but I have never been there and not had a good time. My wife prefers it to the dirt so looks like will will be down there for Thanksgiving should be crazy

Only bad time we had at Pismo was 4 years ago. I took the kids to Pismo while the wife was in Mexico(I refuse to go back). We stayed in a tent over spring break and the wind was terrible, to say the least We lasted 2 days. Usually, when we go and the wind picks up and we are not ridingwe go to town, lunch, or whatever. But, like Teebone said, part of the experience is the crowd Just got to separate yourself, from the idiots, as best, as you can.
We will also be there over Thanksgiving

Yeah, when we were there during that Portugese festival, which you say is in August, the wind was worse than horrible. All of our other friends that were there had to pile in our RV to get away from it because it was so bad that you couldn't even be outside without being instantly sandblasted. We just have bad luck with the wind every time we go, so hubby's reluctant to make that drive. It's quite a way from where we live.

More than likely we'll be doing Gorman (Hungry Valley) and that new place we found by Salton Sea the most this winter.

Just got back from Ocotillo Wells... Great weather, a little crowded than usal but otherwise great trip. Only upset was the usal jerks who park their toyhauler and truck right in front of our camp.
