directions to coal creek

Okay, the week is finally here. WILL IT EVER END? We leave on Thursday night so we can ride Friday morning. It is only a four hour drive from louisville. I can't wait. I am still trying to round up a GPS unit so I don't get lost while I am down there. I have a feeling that I could make it through the night but it would still suck haveing to camp in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!!!! We are still working on finding a place to camp. If you can camp in the parking lot then we are good. We are staying in a tent and will have a T.V. and a Playstation. GOT TO HAVE SOMETHING TO PASS THE TIME AT NIGHT. I need a six pack rack so i can carry gas for the v-force. IT SURE SEEMS TO SUCK THE GAS. If you are down there look for either a turqouise F-250 or a Maroon S-10 Blazer with a really wide 2-place trailer. That will be use. Looking forward to an awesome ride and hoping to meet new people. SEE YA.

Big Blazer,
You will not need a gps. Just buy a map for a few dollars and anyway, some times it is fun to get lost. I grew up riding windrock before you had to pay. You can actually go to Kentucky if you know where you are going. I think you guys will have a KILLER time! Just bring extra gas and the essentials. You can camp in the parking lot if you get there early enough. There is camping down the road if not. If it is clear the days you ride, hit trail 4. Off of that trail there is a trail that goes up to a **** with spectacular views of the Smokies and all the ridges between wind rock and the Smokies. Either way, there are killer views evreywhere. Be safe and have fun!!

Junkie,
Thanks for the post. I can't wait. We are taking plenty of cameras. I am going to take GPS just for safety sakes. We are going to try to camp in the parking lot but if not it is no big deal. How to see you there or someone else on here.

BigBlazer - If you're camping in the parking lot, there isn't any electric for your goodies. The campground may have electric hookups, but if you're in the parking lot - take a generator with you! We have several guys on our site that just got back and have posted pics - if you want to check them out the site is www.quadcrew.com go to the "down south" section. There are links to tons of them. QuadCrew,
Thanks for posting. I was wondering if you had any ideas on what trails to stay off of. I have been riding for a long time and I am not afraid to climb hills but I don't want to be trying to climb hills that we shouldn't be climbing. I will be on a V-force and my buddy will be on a Raptor. We can climb hills that the 4x4's can climb if they aren't real rutted, I saw you talking about trail #3 at Windrock. What makes this trail so bad? Do you think we could climb it? We would really like to be able to see some really good views and have some pretty decent hillclimbs to. Nothing to bad, I would hate to ruin my impression of the place because I flipped or one of us got hurt.
Thanks,
Bigblazer

BigBlazer - I haven't ridden #3 yet - if you join our site, ask Nascar - he is the authority on the trails there! I do know that is has some pretty big rocks, that move. He says it's a different trail everytime someone rides it, cuz it moves the rocks around. Pretty steep and long. There are lots of places that have good size climbs and great views - you can see the smokies, it is very cool. Buy a map at the parking lot ( I think they're like $3.) - it tells you what trails have the views, the waterfalls, etc. Remember though, when they say difficult, they're not kidding! The count down is on for you....one more day! Have fun. (Mrs. Q)

I tgot back from Coal Creek on Saturday night. WOW is a good word to describe that place. We absolutely loved it. There are some problems with the trail markers. Trail 12 needs to be marked a little better. We took what we thought was trail 12 and ended up on some hunting groups land (supposedly). We came out at a cemetery and followed this road down till we saw signs for trail 10, 8 and 12. We couldn't find the trail to the windmills but we did go up there really early and the fog had not burned off yet. Trail 22, 21, and 2 are some fast trails. My only probably with the place was there were no real hillclimbs to speak of. The marked trails did a good job of weaving around the mountains not up them. We rode about 150 miles in 1.5 days so all in all it wasn't a bad trip. We liked it so much we are going back the weekend before Thanksgiving. Hopefully it won't be to cold.

I would have to say yes, but only if you could stay for a couple of days (3 to 4 riding days). Also if you can bring a truck to ride around the trails in. You can break up the days between trucks atv's. It was fun on a quad but it would be just as much fun in a truck or jeep. When we were down there we saw sixteen HUMMER's out on the trail. I mean on the trail, not the main trails but real trails, getting scratched and muddy. It was one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Good riding, especially with a family, lots of different variety(fast, technical, mud, hills). Yeah, I would drive 12 hours to ride there. But like I said stay a couple of days so you can see the overlooks and the beuty and to really enjoy as much as possible.
The town of Oak Ridge has a pretty cool Museum to tour too. I believe it is the Science and Technology museum. I have been there and it would be a good break from riding. It is only like ten minutes away and well worth the visit if you are interested in that kind of stuff.
If you decide to go PM me and I can give you more info(directions, trails to ride, trails to avoid, other stuff)
See ya,
Brian

Oh yeah, we rode three but we went down all the rocks. Talk about a major pain in the A$$ especially if you don't have four wheel drive. Trying to get the wheels unstuck ointing down hill ina bunch of rocks is harder than you think. IT WAS FUN WATCHING THE HUMMERS CLIMB UP THE ROCKS ON THREE.
