Alaska

I've road many trails but I have to say Alaska has the best trails in the entire US. If any of you have rode the trails here in this great state and know of a better trail elsware please let me know because I'm always looking for an adventure. Nothing beats the feeling you get when you find yourself in a remote location and you get the feeling that you're the only person left on the planet and that no one has ever been in that same spot that you are right now.

Outrage;
I've responded to your posts before; you answered my question about bringing my quad along on a planned trip to Alaska. Since then, I've been following your posts because I am also considering a Suzuki King Quad to replace my 5 year old Polaris Expedition. (I'm still not sure I want an automatic but everything else about it looks great). Anyway, I can sure relate to riding somewhere that is isolated and you get the feeling you are the pioneer, and no one else has ever been there. I used to get that feeling in Colorado, in the Silverton, Telluride,
Ouray triangle after Labor Day; when everyone headed back to work. Now those mountains are almost a traffic jam, as so many people have discovered it. Utah has some great spots, but not the numerous elevations that Colorado has.
I'm still thinking of Alaska for next summer, and bought one of those Delorme topographic atlas'. Maybe you could give some coordinates of the areas you ride and I could look them up on the atlas, to give me something to muse about until I can get up there.
Alaska is a long way from here in Alabama, so we've thought about flying up there and renting a Motorhome; a little expensive (about $230/day), but hauling our 32-foot travel trailer won't be cheap with Canadian diesel prices. Are there many places that rent a decent ATV?
Finally, it looks like Alaska consists of mountains and tundra/marshland. Are there really enough relatively dry trails that reach significant altitude to enjoy? Many thanks for your thoughts

GPS coordinates would be no problem. There's also a few web sites that have this along with directions to the trail heads, current trail conditions, and pictures of previous trips. Check out artictrails.net. This is the main site for ATV trials around the Anchorage area. Send me your e-mail address and I can send you a trail guide if it isn't to be to send.
There are a few places that rent but I'm not familiar with any of them but most of them have web sites so should be able to find out more. If I'm not mistaken they cost about $160 a day but you'll have to check into it for yourself.
Most trails can be rode in a few hours but there are many where you can ride thousands of miles and that's not an exaggeration. The best thing about coming in the summer is that it NEVER gets dark. One thing you may want to consider is carrying a gun. With the abundance of wildlife it's worth thinking about. I don't carry one myself but I always go with someone that has one on hand. I'm sure you'll be okay as long you're on the machine with the noise and all but if you stop for lunch like most do...well you decide.
Let me know if you need/want any more info on ATVing Alaska.

hey Outrage,
i am moving to Alaska with my parents sometime next june(2005). I am moving to the Noroth Pole, and i was wondering if you have ever been there. i have a couple times, and i have seen the atv track. If you have been there, do you know anyhitng about it? are there any other race tracks that you know of anywhere in alaska? I really dont wanna move, i wanna stay here with my boyfriend mike, hes an awesome guy! but we have came to the conclusion that when i move ill be 16, so when he turns 18 (in two years) he is going to move up and live with me. The main reason we want to live up there is because of the fourwheeling laws. Here in Maine, its hard to find anything that you can do on a wheeler, your pipe cant be over 96db, you cant ride on the road over 900ft, you have to be over 16, and yada, yada, yada. Then this new girl (Roxane Quimby) just bought like half the state of Maine that there is a snowsledding trail going through, and she syas she wants NO snowsleds, NO atv's, NOTHING! i was so mad. She is also trying to take away hunting, fishing, trapping, she and here little Agusta buddies already took away snaring. So basicly they are taking away everything and maine is gonna become a wildlife park. So yah, anyways, i just wrote to ask you about the race ATV/dirt-bike tracks up there, adn what information you know about them. thanks, mindy o, and another ?, how loud can your Pipes be on your wheelers?

Sorry but I don't know much about that area or the racing scene. There are a few tracks around the state but to tell you the truth most people here would rather ride trails and and explore the vast wilderness and wildlife. I am one of them...don't see much fun going in a circle. As for the loudness of your exhaust and stuff I don't think there is any law. Most roads around ATV area have paths to ride your machine along the road. Most trails are public so no cost, no rules, no one messing with you.
I hope this helps. If you need more info let me know.
