rode over towards tower hill last sunday when the weather was nice... i've ridden there for years and had heard about the crack down. i hadn't been out since last fall and it warmed up so i decided to see what the trails were like. i didn't even make it a mile down the trail and i get stopped by two cops riding atvs in street clothes. i didn't get a warning or anything. he wrote me a citation onsite and now i have a court date. so much for this great riding place.
i've heard people say they are just cracking down now and soon everyone will be riding there again... but i don't know what to believe. i thought for sure if i got stopped i would at least get a warning or something.

How much was the citation? What kind of atvs were they riding?

Were you parked on the Shady Beach side? What type of citation? Trespassing? Was anyone else riding besides you? There is a state trooper who lives on Elk Neck Rd and he may be moonlighting for the home owners on the fringe of the property. They are still hung up waiting on building permits for at least another year and I can't imagine they will patrol it that long. As soon as the weather is warm they'll be hard pressed trying to chase everyone down since there are several areas to enter it from. I know the trails in there like the back of my hand and there are alot of easy "escapes". Too bad about your citation. Let us know the details and stay safe.

there were two cops on honda quads. i know these trails as well as anyone... i've been riding there for years and i am local... i ride on and off the property from my property. the citation didn't involve a fine. i just have to go to court and the cop told me i probably would get probation before judgement, but it is still a pain.
i was riding on the single track from the elk neck rd entrance to the pits that is in the woods behind the horse farm. right before i came out onto the pit road they were coming the opposite way and they both blocked the trail... while there are lots of "escapes" i didn't have anywhere to go. the citation was for operating an off road vehicle on state property. anyone else gotten a citation, besides me? the cops made it sound like they wrote a million of those things.
i could probably ride there again, but i am not willing to take the risk. if i got caught riding there again and got another citation i would be in bad shape. i have about 40 acres between myself and another private landowner that i can ride on anyway. the terrain is not quite as much fun, but oh well.

Sorry to hear about that. I'm a local as well and it seems we have finally lost what used to be a great area to ride. We ride a place in Gore, Va called the Cove sometimes and will be spending alot of time at Tower City. Both are a two hour drive which sucks but it beats having to deal with the cops. Ever since last summer when 50 or more riders started showing up I knew the days were numbered. I'm a little confused about them saying it was state property, but the fringe on that side is part of the state park so perhaps thats why. The main area off Shady is owned by a developer or did it all get sold back to the state? You are welcome to join us at Tower City. We are heading up a week from Saturday for a day trip. Stay safe.

there is a strip of state owned property directly behind the horse farm. it is only about 40 acres of land. it makes me wonder if that is why they cited me. maybe they can't enforce anything on the other land that is owned by the developed d.r. horton.
i'm looking into tower city... i am not real big on the $300 membership fee, but i have heard great things about it. if i only ride there a few times a year it doesn't seem worth the investment. everyone is talking about this 8 bees place near paragon that is supposed to be really great and that is apparently only $25 a day.

cc300rc or whomever;
You can ride 20,000 acres owned by Reading Anthracite for $100.00. I've been riding on their property for awhile, it's 2.5 hrs away but good riding. I'm going up again in April if anyone is interested.
