Mammoth Lakes

Great area! There are lots of campgrounds where you can ride right from camp, plus you can do remote camping in a lot of areas. You can ride any dirt road, but there is very little if any single track. But, not very much access to many spectacular high altitude rides (like you can do around Bishop). I suggest remote camping by Deadman Creek, if you don't need to be near town. Get a forest service map from the visitor center, and go explore.
One ride you absolutely want to do is Laurel Lakes! The trailhead is on Sherwin Road, southeast of town. The trail goes straigh up the mountain and ends at two spectacular lakes. Best scenery in the area. 10,000 feet, so your machines will run like crap!
Lots of great riding around Bishop as wll. Here are a few: http://www.sneakersmc.com/bishopmaps.htm Besides the Coyote ride, I suggest Wheeler Ridge, and Silver Canyon/Weiman Canyon.
What kind of machines you riding????
We do some tricks for high altitude riding. An easy thing is to drill holes in the airbox lid, and tape them over when riding at low altitude. Then, as you ascned, uncover some to the holes and you get more air.......kind of a crude rejet, but it works! Better yet, use TPI valves: http://www.thunderproducts.com/tpi_valve.htm

Trails.....there really aren't "trails", just hundreds of miles of dirt roads. Just camp near any dirt road, and you can go all over the place.
Lots of places to park big rigs, all over the place. You can't do remote camping in some areas near town, but anywhere else, you can camp almost anywhere you want. Again, get a map and go to the visitors center and ask questions.
I suggest Deadman Creek. The road is just north of the rest area on 395. Go down the dirt road until you come to the creek, and just pull over near it and camp.
Or, closer to town is Sherwin Creek campground.

We use to spend quite a bit of time up that way each summer, but the last couple of years we have been doing a long Oregon Dunes trip, so that eats up lots of my vacation time. We might do a quick long weekend trip though, sometime before it snows.

Well if your going up to the oregon dunes, I hope your going to Sandfest (lol). I missed this year because we went to the Coral pink dunes in Utah.---------Very nice.

Know what you mean. When I was there, I was on atop a large hill enjoying the scenery, until I saw a drunk guy on a new raptor without a helmet with a girl on the back drive right into a sandrail. I thought they were both dead. Apparently they only suffered mild concousions and alot of bruises, and the raptor appeared to be totaled. Also, men and women driving around with a beer in one hand and a baby strapped to thier back. They have now banned all alchohol from the dunes as an appeasement to some parents that were going to sue the state for allowing thier 13 year old daughter to enter a wet T-shirt contest, so it should be mellower now - I hope.

In the dark, we drove into a campsite by mistake. There were about 30 underage kids standing around, each with a beer bottle in their hands, and they couldn't even manage to move out of the way to let us by. I had to bump them with my truck to get them to move. Looked like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! No thanks.......
