There is some neat riding around here. East of Barstow off the I-15, Ghost Town Road exit. Great if you have a 4X4 quad and are looking for very challenging terrain, but lots of stuff a sport quad can handle too.

Calico is a fun but dusty place to ride or 4x4. Fun to explore the mines.

Yeah, the wind doesn't get down intot he canyons so well to clear out the dust. If you are camping, I suggest you camp out in the front somewhere and not back up in the canyons....just for that reason.

Reconranger looks like youve been every where...I just bought my first quad. 07 Polaris 500x2. Do you guys ride trails or just open lands with sportquads. I would love to join you guys for a ride sometime. I live in Oak Hills at the top of the Pass 1mile from Summit Inn.

Hun-I have a riding buddy who lives very near you. He is however down right now with an injury he got motocrossing mini dirt bikes.

You are welcome to join us any time. I think we are going back to Calico next month. We tend to ride the desert during the cool months, then switch to the mountains (Sierra, Inyo, and San Bernardino) and more technical riding in summer. Parts of Calico are however best done on a ute!

He is actually VERY messed up! He slipped off the pegs on a big landing and it yanked his leg back. Split the bone in his lower leg from top to bottom! He has been off work and of course can't ride for months now. Has yet another surgery coming up soon...........

Is the road getting off the hwy graded enough so that a 2wd truck/ toyhauler combo can find a place to camp?

See map: http://www.calicotown.com/ohv/images/topomap.jpg

You can camp at the entrance to Odessa canyon without driving back into the soft stuff. There is a large flat area there, but it appears to fill up very fast on weekends! Some folks camp back in the canyons, but the roads are sandy and you would be eating dust all day.

Another option is to camp at the country campground, inside the Calico park. You can ride from your camp if you are using campground 2, but you can't ride around inside the camp, all you can do is hop on your quad and ride out to the trails. Last time I was there, everybody in campground 2 was OHV. http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/parks/calico.htm

I am actually surprised that the county seems to be promoting OHV use here, and that, when we live in an age where we are generally opposed by most government agencies!
