Wisconsin/Illinois Laws
#1
I bought a 4 wheeler for ice fishing this year and need to find out what I need to do to be legal on the lakes. I used a 3 wheeler years ago and don't remember having to do anything as far as registering it or even insuring it. I would like to use it on both Illinois and Wisconsin lakes. I am an Illinois resident and I can't find any info on the web that spells it out. Thanks to all that can help.

For WI see page 4.
dnr.wi.gov/org/es/enforcement/DOCS/ATVRegs.pdf
If that don't work try. Click on regulations on left side of page.

Thanks Upnort for the info. The way I read it I will have to get a Wisc. trail pass for $35 to operate on the lakes. They always have their hands in your pocket, but thats the price you pay to play. Thanks again

Depending what you paid for the machine & how long you keep it in WI might be easier to register it for wi. 35 a year vs 30 for 2 but then you would have to pay tax, most likely 5.5%. It would have to have been a pretty cheap machine to make that feasible though.

To ride on DNR ground or Wisconsin trails do you have to have a safety course certificate? Would my 12 yr. old son be able to ride his 300EX without any problems, especially if we were stopped by a ranger. I realize we would probably need a sticker or permit to ride in Wis. Planning a trip and just want to know before making a 6 hr. drive from Illinois.
