NW Wisconsin riding?
#1
When I was driving through From Superior to Ashland last weekend, I saw many motels with 4-wheelers parked in front. I had heard they can ride on the snowmobile trails. True? is there a lot of riding to be had in that area? Any info would be helpful.

Certain counties in Northern Wisconsin let you ride during the snowmobiling season, and soon all will. One that i know of for sure is langlade county, you are allowed to ride all the time there. E-mail me with any questions. Slingerb@aol.com

Well, south of Superior,in Douglas county there are a few trails you can ride on in the summer. Most of the snomobile trails are open for atv's in the winter only. There is an old railroad grade from Superior to Ashland that is open for atv's.This will take you through Bayfield county which has 100 miles or so of trails open for atv's.Iron county has about 100 miles of trails as well. The southern part of Ashland county has a great trail called the "Dead Horse Run Trail" A rough trail with plenty of mud.Check out the websit below. It has all the phone numbers and a brief trail description for each county.Call and they will send you free maps.Hope this helps.

I live in south central Wisconsin but ride in Iron County every-other weekend from April to December (we miss a few, but not many). It’s not because there are no other good places to ride, we just like it there better. There are more waterfalls in Iron County than just about any other county in the state, and almost all of them are accessible by ATV. Some are obscure enough that you’ll have a great time looking for them and won’t see a soul while you’re there (great skinny-dipping!). Trout nearly jump from the rivers and streams into your creel (just seeing if you’re paying attention). 70% of Iron County is public land and you can camp damn near anywhere you please. The new local warden is a very reasonable and friendly guy (just don’t **** him off) and with the exception of the Frontier Bar and Campground in Cedar (a$$holes) most everyone we’ve met up there in the last 6 years has been friendly and helpful. Unlike some other counties they not only try to attract ATV business but they know how to treat you right when you get there. We especially like the mud/rocks/hills and scenic vistas of Trail 6 through the Gogebic Range. Last week we watched the full moon rise across the valley from the Iron Belt vista and it was so big it looked like you could reach out and touch it.
We have a travel trailer parked at Island Lake Campground and Resort in the south-central part of the county. From there the Dead Horse Run trail in Ashland County is accessible too. An easy day’s ride will get you to Lake Superior and back. Lakes, rivers, waterfalls, scenic vistas, mud, rocks and more trails than you could explore in a lifetime…. With all this it’s hard to believe we can spend a week there, put about 300 miles on our quads and see less than half-a-dozen other riders the whole time. We like it there. If anyone wants info I’ll be happy to oblige. Email me at wdsman@bigfoot.com

Floodrunner, where are you from in central Wisconsin? I grew up in the Portage, Pardeeville area. My friends and family ride in northern Wisconsin about 5 to 6 times a summer also. I love it there. My favorite trail system is either Park Falls area or Iron River. Your right about the lack of other riders. We ride all day and are lucky if we see another group of people.

Chris, I’ve lived around the Madison area most of my life. Twelve years ago we bought a little cabin on the Wisconsin River a couple miles south of Portage as a hunting/fishing/get-away spot. Three years ago I tripled the size of it and now we call it home and commute to the Madison area for work. Are you still in this area?

FloodRunner, no I am afraid that I do not live in that area any more. I now live in Rochester Minnesota. I hope to some day move back to that area. My family still lives there and I visit home quite a bit. I love the Wisconsin River. We go sand bar hopping and camping on there all of the time.
I went to college in Madison, and hopefully next year I can move back and get a job there.
Let me know if you would like to get together and ride sometime.

Hello to all. I to am located in WI (Waukesha Area) and ride up in the Iron county area and love the area. Last Spring we had 15 riders and stayed at the Days Inn in Hurley. (24 hour hot tub, pool sauna).
Floodrunner, I have only experienced the Potato river falls, what other H20falls are accessible?. Also when you ride trail #6 out of Hurley, have they finnally openned the old railroad bridge for traffic or do they still have the detour?. Also when trail#6 crosses the road that leads to Whitecap Ski hill, do you continue on or do you head to Iron Belt?. We usually turn onto the road and cross into Iron Belt. Stopping at Sidekicks for food and drink.
Saxon Harbor is very neat and has a great Fish Fry and view.
Island Lake is a beautiful and quite place. Love the little tavern with a refrigerator full of beer and soda.
