Asking permission/Trespassing
#1
Lets assume you come across a really good trail, while riding down the road. (assuming it is legal) (or insert your own beginning here...)
How many of you just start riding this trail, without first trying to contact the landowner to get permission?
I ask this, being a landowner, as well as a quad rider...

That,s a tough question.
Almost all the trails I ride are either club owned or federal,But reaching the outer edges of these regins it starts to become a gray area of are you,or are you not on privite property.
I was riding in a big dence wooded area and got turned around. And finialy came out on a none motorized part of a rails to trails trail. The only way I knew that was that their was a sign.So I promply back tracked and found my way out legally. It turned out the club trail ended right out some guys driveway. But he didn't seem to mind.
Perhaps you may want to put up a sign stating land owner prefrences.
One example in new york on trails with deadly unexpected hair pin turns some land owners hang broken windshields from tree branches as a warning to riders to slow down.It worked for me.
In eastern Pa I've also seen clubs,Place large chunks of concrete in stagered rows that you can barily fit through. At intersections on busy trails to cut down high speed colichions(man I can't spell that)and they work. I was doing 60mph when I came up on them. And had to shut it down to 5 mph to get through.
PS--Bombardier DS650 you won't make it through there.

The answer to "why" is: Because it is my property. It is private, it is not bordered by any public property that someone can accidently get off of. (I have done this before too, but once brought to my attention, I got off, and didn't go back)
I find myself in a unique situation, being owner and rider, I understand the desire to ride, but I also know what can happen if someone is injured on my property too. LAWSUITS!

In Florida, as long as you have it posted "No Tresspassing" every so many feet( according to florida statutes), 330, i think, they would have a tough time bringing a lawsuit.
I would call the Police when you know that they are there, and keep a log of when you call and the description of the riders. If there ever was a lawsuit, you could prove that you tried to keep them out, that along with the signs should keep you safe legally.
As for hanging broken windshields, I don't think that yould be a good idea. They are just begging to be sued.
I do, however, like the concrete. It is a good way to slow people down at crossroads, and the only ones to suffer are those who do not slow down.

I keep off private property myself, but some of my buddies do not share the same view.I have on occasion rode on timber companies properties when there was no hunting season going on.I realize this is still private property, but I feel that I am doing no harm as long as I don't run their trees over.Individual's property I stay off of!!

I see your delema.Try to make the trail a bad trail,Down trees, stumps, heavy brush,I don't know how much this would inconvience you as a rider.Just cut them off where they enter.Or make it not worth the trip. One day with a bobcat could do it.Just leave a hidden entrance for yourself.Mabee a small gate.Look at it like a good chalenge.I've deflected trails before.Just don't make it look deflected.Redirect them to a better trail option.

About Trespassing;
Warning.... Tresspassing in the state of Texas has been upgraded to a FELONY.. carrying possible prison time!!!!..
As for signs, that has been changed also... ALL ANY landowner has to do is mark trees or posts every 50 feet along his property line with PURPLE paint.. Its has to be 5 inches wide by 10 inches tall.
If you cross it, you take your freedom in your own hands...

Oh I wish they would do that in Indiana. Actually I think here, all the owner has to do, is post one sign at the "main" entrance to the property, and that is all. I believe, I might be WAY wrong on that...
UPDATE!: Someone shot my POSTED: NO TRESPASSING signs. I had 3 near the entrace that is most often used by these hoodlums, and they SHOT my signs. I think that might be considered a threat? Perhaps? Well anyway, this isn't the "feel sorry for the landowner" message board. I'll get off my soapbox now.
Take it easy.
Be careful
Ask permission!
