Newbie ride review….
(Since I have only been riding for 7 months now, this is from a true greenhorn’s point of view.)
Made it up to Whissenhunt ORV area outside of Dahlonega, Ga. last Sunday for my first adventure riding in a public area. 15 miles of trails for motorcycles and atvs (small area to some of you, I know.). I could not find anyone to go with me on short notice so I thought a public area would be best since I was “alone”.
Directions on the DNR site were good and found it with no problem. 1hr 45min from south Atlanta. Met some 2-wheeler riders who were very helpful in warning me what to watch for. Primary warning was the main trail is an old log road and some people have a habit of not staying to the right when exiting blind curves and tight areas resulting in fairly frequent head-ons. (Maybe this is common elsewhere?) No close calls while I was there, every one I met on the trails were very courteous. (Ever notice the 2-wheel gang seem to be much more stylishly dressed?)
The single track trails were very well marked and all looped back to the main trail eventually. Difficulty ratings were posted and may have been just a little bit inflated. I ride an ’01 Big Bear 4x4 so difficult is a relative term when it relates to terrain. The trails were very challenging as far as turns, twists, humps, roots, rocks, very tight trees and some good hills but only trail # 10 made me want to do that “Oh Yeah!” yell when I reached the top. (Now I see how all of you became adrenalin junkies!) I would like to see how some of the sport bike gang deal with these trails just for my own education. Speed = tree bark? It was very dry last weekend up there and my impression may be a little different with some mud on these trails! My purpose for going was also a recon mission before I take my wife up for a ride and we may not tackle that #10 trail on our first ride. She still gets unhappy with scratches on her Kodiak.
Overall I had a blast and plan on skipping chores to go again this Sat. I do have one person going with me this trip so I do not have to be quite so “conservative” in my riding.
Hope to try the Beasley **** or the Locust Stake areas next, any Ga riders been to those?
Tim
