The following is a letter I just sent to the Pennsylvania DCNR:

Dear sirs,

My girlfriend and I just went riding on the ATV trail in Bald Eagle State Forest. I believe the name of the trail was called "Jack's Mountain ATV Trail. I was wondering if you have so much of our registration money (over $2 million from what I've heard) , why aren't the trails marked? There were three signs on the trail. One was an arrow (near the trail head) and the other two were caution signs. There was one sign stating that an area was close to ATVs, but other than that there were no markings as to where it was LEGAL to ride and where it was ILLEGAL to ride. We tried to stay on the trail as best as we could, but it was near impossible without trail markers and arrows showing where to turn. There were also several sign posts with nothing on them. Should we ride there, or not? What was the sign post was there for? Please be aware that the trail has changed somewhat since the maps were put up on the ATV site. Why was this not addressed? Why weren't the trail maps updated? It would take less than five minutes to do that.

With the new ATV laws that take effect on October 23, you can now fine us twice as much for riding in an area that is poorly (if at all) marked if we stray off the trail. Does this seem fair to you? Don't you think you should get off your butts and make some improvements to these trails? Heck, I'm not saying that the trails should be as smooth as glass, but you could at least mark where we can and can't ride. I know that LEGAL riding of ATVs isn't a big concern of yours (or the current administration for that matter), that doesn't net you any money besides registration. But when you can catch someone riding ILLEGALLY that's where the big money rolls in for you. Does that sound wrong to you? It does to me.

If all ATVs in Pennsylvania are to be registered and insured ( both of mine already are), don't you think there should be some more trails? The trail system you have is woefully inadequate for the sheer numbers of ATVs in state. If all the ATVs in the state were lined up end to end, you would have more than enough to fill up every trail two abreast. Why not open up forest roads to ride on? I doubt that 100,000 ATVs could tear up a road the way that a log truck or log skidder does. Now that we riders have to carry liability insurance, I don't see any reason why you couldn't open up the "snowmobile" trails and roads for us in the summer (weather permitting of course).

In closing, I doubt that you will reply to this E-mail. It is completely asinine to have more trails for hikers (which there are less of in PA) than for ATV riders. Especially when we are PAYING for the trails with our registration money.

Thank you!
Mike Chero

I think this sums it up in a nutshell.

Insurance, this blows!

What is the cheapest place to get full coverage insurance for an atv.
This especially blows because i am only 19 and they probably consider me high risk or some crap.
I wonder if i can put it in my dad's name even though the title is my name.

Let me know where you get your insurance and how much you pay a year and if it's full or just liability

Dirt,
You aren't the only one who has to drive a while to ride! We have the strip mines right up the road from us, but damn, that gets old real quick. We have went to Susquehannock, it sucked. Trails were wide open dirt roads, nothing real adventuresome. We went to Sproul. We had more fun camping than riding. There are some cool trails, but after 1/2 day, you've seen it all. We're thinking of going to ANF, but that's a haul. We'd like to go to Hatfield-McCoy, but that, also, is a haul. When you have to drive for 3 or more hours, you want to be on trails that you like, and that will keep you riding all day, not for 4 or 5 hours. We would go back to Sproul, but probably just to camp. When you have a Dodge Ram hauling 3/4 ton of equipment, the pleasure of the trails need to overcome the cost of the gas (for the truck and the ATVs). If it doesn't, you more than likely won't go back. We'll never return to Susquehannock, even though they have 43 miles of trails. The payoff wasn't worth the payout. ANF seems like it's our next choice, but that's a hefty gas bill too. Then there's where to camp, food, etc. We're willing to try anything now...but it's getting kind of old.

I drive more than four hours to ride up near you. You have no right to complain about no riding. You can ride from Hazilton to NY. You have nothing to complain about. That's like someone living next to the ocean and saying they have no place to go boating. You need to do some more exploring if you are getting board.

Wayne,
I have alot to complain about. The only legal riding anywhere around here is at least 2 hours away. Then, once you are there, you're done riding in 4 hours, cuz you've ridden every trail at least 20 times. It gets old really quick. The only thing that is looking like it's even half worth our time is ANF. And that is at least a 3 hour drive. Where is Hazilton anyway? And if we can ride from there to NY, then why doesn't anyone around here know about it? Are you talking about legal paths, I doubt it.

I think that since we have to pay for registration and plates, etc....we should have at least one decent trail system (you know, like 60 miles of trails) accessible by an hour drive or less. No one should HAVE to drive longer than one hour to do a days worth of riding.

Everyone talks about the poker runs and such. I realize that there are a gazillion of these things that are somewhat near us, but I personally don't like them. I've heard too many horror stories about those things. I like to get on my ATV and ride...at my own pace, without worrying about the other 2,000 riders gettin upset cuz i'm not riding fast enough, or crazy enough, or whatever they might get upset about. It's bad enough that you usually come across 2 or 3 jerks when you're riding on State land...you know, the ones that have already drank a case of beer, but still think they're ok to ride their ATV even though they can't speak. People, drinking doesn't mix with riding your ATV no more than it mixes with driving a car. Don't be a fool.

Anyhow, I think I've went off the subject enough. Hopefully you got my point.
