First I would like to thank lackdog for the info, thanks a lot!! We left weds. and made it back for fathers day. In that time frame, we didn't even cover half of the area. There was four quads ( 1 warrior, 1 400ex, 1 650 kaw and 1 660 griz) and the bike of choice was definately the 4x4's, although the sporty's didn't have to much trouble, just had to go around some obstacles. note: full skid protection is a must... The area is nothing short of spectacular! I thought I would have to go out west to experience trail riding like this. The first day we went on our own and got lost. The next day we took a guide from BB motel. The waterfalls, overlooks and rocky crossings are awesome and the expense for the guide was worth it.(cost was 50 dollars a man). We are going on the weekend of the fourth of July and Labor Day anybody is welcome to come.

Kez,can you tell me where big bay is? I was getting ready to post a question about an area I heard of in the Huron national forest. This is an area near a town called East Tawas.Does anyone know anything about that area? A guy told me they used to ride there some years ago and it was supposed to be real nice. Thanks

Hey kodiac1,
I've ridden that area before. Back in the day it was awesome! But then they passed the bill in the lower pennisula that stated that all roads were closed unless posted open. Anyway though, it's still a great place to ride. There's 2 trail systems over in that area. One of them looks like a giant T. (I've never ridden that one). The other is two small loops. The trails are really nice, but small. I'm not sure if you'd want to drive all that way just to ride them. I have some pics of the trail. Here's the link:

kodiac 1, Big Bay is 25 miles NNW of Marquette. Twinshot is wrong in stating that you cannot ride on seasonal roads in the U.P. However he is correct in stating you cannot ride on roads in the lower portion of michigan. I did my homework before I went up there and the rules that apply to lower michigan do not apply in the exact same way as in U.P., if you don't believe me you can contact Michigan DNR. I've ridden all over the lower michigan trail system and you certainly cannot compare the two. If you go up to BB you must purchase an ORV sticker before you ride, they can be purchased at any Walmart or sporting goods store in Michigan. NOTE: there is no true trail system in BB, it is made of entirely seasonal roads and old logging trails, believe me it is awesome! Check out lackdogs site, his pics don't do the area justice, they are what sold me to the area.

hey twinshot
i go up to big bay michigan alot and you can ride pretty much "anywhere unless posted" not "nowhere unless posted". You can ride on any street you just have to ride the shoulder (stay right). I love riding up there...im going maybe 4th of july weekend, for sure the weekend after that and for sure labor day weekend....
Maybe in the lower peninsula "all roads are closed unless posted open", but up there there is nothing so ride where ya want....
Go to my website and see what riding is like in big bay...i took over 200 pics of the last trip we took up there
WHAT BIG BAY RIDING IS LIKE

Actually if you read what he wrote, he was asking about East Tawas, and this is located in the Lower Pennisula, where it is closed unless posted open. But since you're both not from Michigan, I'll cut you some slack on that one. Yes you are both right, in the U.P. it is open unless posted closed, but the L.P. has different rules. Trust me, you don't want to ride on the side of the road in Lower Michigan, you will get a ticket.
I'm actually going to Big Bay the week of July 4th, so I'm looking forward to riding there.

East Tawas is in the lower peninsula. UP here in the UP EH, we ride all over.. Get your self a good map program and a gps, and you can go anywhere up here. The places will blow you away, But you don't have to pay anybody to get out there. There are several members here who would gladly ahre information. I would have loved to ride last weekend. I could have saved you $50.00 per person. Rode from Marquette to bigbay a couple of weekends ago. I could take you to most of the places that you showed and more. Frogman, are you up for a ride?
