christmas valley oregon dunes/whos been there and how was it?
my wife and i live in eugene oregon and usually ride the dunes in florence but would like to try the dunes in christmas valley if any one has been there and can tell me the size of the dunes i would like to hear from you.i dont want to drive over there just to find that the dunes are very small or that the riding area is not large enough for a good days worth of riding.

1. its big.
2. no services
3. yes Air Life from Bend goes there, 20 min to hosp by chopper.
4. dunes can be 40-50 feet tall. i have video but cant transmit yet [analog video]
we try to go a couple times a year as the coast is a trek fom here. [bend]
5. havent run into a ranger yet.
6. havent run into an ahole yet either.
7. its inland, so the 99db rule applies, unlike coastal dunes, but like i say, i've never seen a ranger there....
try it , you'll like it. and if ya dont, you can hit East Fort Rock closer to Bend. 310 miles of trails, 4 campgrounds, all USFS. very very nice.
am told that deseret dunes are harder packed then coastal dunes...no quicksand that i know of...
lotsa fun!
feel free to pm me if you wanna know more. can fax over the official OHV guide if you want.

Haven't been there in the winter, but in the summer I can tell you it is DUSTY!!!! the sand is not the same as coast sand. It's more of an ash than sand. The fine silt gets into everything! But it's fun! There is a dry lake bed just west of the dunes. That's kind of fun too!

I've been there a couple of times and really liked it. There is a lot of area to ride with some pretty serious dunes. There are antolope, deer, elk, and coyotes running around there too.
The lost forest is next to them too. Its kind of neat to check out.
I seen a ranger there on the service road. He was a great guy and didn't bother anyone. Just told me about the rule of not picking up any wood to burn. You are required to bring your own burning material if you want a fire.
Agree with the above post, Fort Rock area is a great place to ride and camp too. Lots of very nice trails and they are very well marked with maps all over the place for free.
