Snowplow using a winch
#1
We just purchased a 2008 700 Rhino with a snowplow (that uses the winch to operate) and are having problems with the cable continuously breaking. Any suggestions how to stop this problem from happening. Thank you.

If your cable is in bad shape replace the cable. If the cable is in good shape something is rubbing against it causing it to weaken and brake, figure out what is rubbing it, try hooking to the plow a different way.

You may need a snowplow style roller fairlead that has a larger diameter bottom roller. The larger diameter roller keeps the cable up off of the metal edge of the fairlead mount better, so it doesn't rub there and eventually become frayed and break. Alternatively you could remove the roller fairlead you have now and use an electric grinder to grind the edge down on the fairlead mount, which is likely where the cable is rubbing.

I found that when you use your main winch for the snow plow, you have too many hard stops(frame against plow). You cannot see the cable, and you are not sure when its up all the way. I made a 2x2 bracket that fits in my front receiver and mounted a cheap Harbor freight 1000 # winch higher up that I can see. Have not broke a cable in 3 seasons and saves wear and tear on my new wireless XT3000.Rhinofrank.

I messed my wire up a little because of letting out too much rope and/or plowing up a snowbank.
I've also winched too far and bent my winch mount(quick release plate).
I have a cheap winch to do this job now and will have to weld my winch mount. I've heard of people using a seat belt type strap on their winch to make it work better.
