thinking of buying a rhino 700fi

me and my GF are thinking about buying a new SXS. preferably a rhino. the only down side is we do ride dirt roads to get from trail to trail. so the 42 mph top speed is well... slow. especially since my friends all have kawasaki teryx's. which hit 50+(with rev box). i read an article that they limit their speed to 42 on the rhinos to prevent rod elongation. so i hate to base my decision on top speed because the kawi's do go very well for their weight and width, but if i put a rev box on the rhino will it ruin the engine, and will it be on par with the kawi?

I'm getting 42 mph with my 450 and its bone stock. So the 700 has got to have some more top end. If you added a CDI ( hunterworks is the way to go) and a machined sheave, you should see low to mid 50's.

First lets get info correct. There is no hold on them. It is a voluntary recall by Yamaha. I have an 08 700 and yes the top speed is 42mph.
Go to hunterworks.com and buy the MSD unit for it. It is a fuel programmer and a CDI. Gets the machines into the low 50s. A sheeve will get you there faster. Here is mine.

The recall is for added safety. They remove the rear sway bar and add 2" spacers to the rear.

A lot of people run a CDI to increase the RPM on their Rhino and there is no harm to the engine. I personally use a Hunterworks Tri Fire thar increased the top speed and improved starting and acceleration, but the MSD or Dynatec should work well also. I like the "brother in law" switch that you can hide and keep the top speed down to about thirty and not allow it to be quickly accelerated which is also good for kids who might use your machine. You can also put a clutch kit in to increase speed, but I haven't found it necessary.
Check out Rhino Forums.net as there is a link to the Yamaha bulletin as well a CPSC. According to the dealers the parts needed are not on hand and they are not supposed to sell any that have not been firttred with these "improvements". You will need to get on a waiting list.
