Mike,
Here in Kaliforn I A the 8th digit (That Y you speak of) determins if it will be a Green or a Red sticker. Knowsalot posted a long time ago how to read the vin #'s. I can no longer find that post.

Ok I figured it out.. according to the standard
Iso standard "The year code in the Vehicle Identification Number is the 10th position. The recommended key for this 10th digit is given in the chart below. Note that starting with model year 2001 vehicles, the 10th position “year code” will be a number instead of a letter. The year code can be the calendar year in which a vehicle is built, or a model or type year allocated by the manufacturer."
1980=A
1981=B
1982=C
1983=D
1984=E
1985=F
1986=G
1987=H
1988=K
1989=K
1990=L
1991=M
1992=N
1993=P
1994=R
1995=S
1996=T
1997=V
1998=W
1999=X
2000=Y
2001=1
2002=2
2003=3
2004=4
2005=5
2006=6
2007=7
2008=8
2009=9
2010=A
2011=B
2012=C
2013=D
So turtler's is a 2002. I am not shocked or excited however, 2002 are entitled to some intermittent failures and defects on their own just as many other quads have had intermittent tranny failures. You are still WAY better off with a 2002 tranny. Sorry for the misfortune Turtler

I disagree.
Heres my vins
JYAM01Y21C001615
JYAM01Y31C001459
Not to mention every CPSC report that I have that shows the vin # has 01 in the 5th and 6th spot. On a website for stolen quads the 2002 that was listed had 02 in the 5th and 6th spot. According to your chart, I have an 82 or a 2012.

Maybe california is yet again different somehow, but I have 17 digits on all my other quads.
JY4AM01301C020071 - 2001 raptor
JH31L1206GC017044 - 1986 250r
JY43DGA0KRA110803 - 1994 Warrior
1 = 2001
G = 1986
R = 1994
Here is the site I gleened the info from

Correction on my Vins. LOL I left out the 4. JY4AM01 etc. So, you are correct sir. and then So, Turtler does have a 02. So much for not having to worry about trannys. I know it's only 1 on these forums but I"m sure there are others. Probably more isolated than the rampant failures of the 01's.
