Default Rear Shock

Hey dudes. I have been looking at a rear shock to replace my broken stock one. I am torn between the Works Ultracross or the Elka w/SSD. I feel the Elka may be built better but it is $200 more. I am not rebuilding the stock one! I ride desert trails, dunes, and jumps. Any suggestions?

I need some help. Someone out there has the Works or the Elka, tell me what you think. I must research all of my big purchases . Help!!!

ok, works are the cheapest replacement shock, and are good shocks, BUT if you have the money, and ride hard, I say no doubt get the elka, it is a MUCH better shock, and you will be much more happy.

I have the Elka SSD and it is much nicer than stock. Although, i'm still trying to tune it (with lots of help from Ridley !!). I didnt realize how much work it is to get it tuned correctly - I think that applies to any shock. Either way, plan on doing lots of controlled testing to get the shock optimized to your liking. Elka will get you pointed in the right direction but it still takes time. I'll be testing out a different (softer) main spring this weekend.........

I agree on the Elka's. If I landed off a jump at all tilted or crooked with the stocker it would try to throw me off, but the Elka just sucks it up and keeps me going straight. I had to raise the height a little with the Elka (it came fully soft) to make it through the whoops without killing myself. With it fully soft (preload) it sets REALLY low. That is great for trails and flatter riding and probably lowered the rear 3-4", but to get it to soak up the whoops correctly I had to raise the rear a little. Now it is probably only 2" lower than stock. But it seems to have an extra inch or two of travel. And the Elka customer service is TOP NOTCH. If you get the Elka, buy it direct from them. It may be a few dollars more than getting it from a retailer, but their service is so great it is worth it.
