For you and your friend, your weight vs his. Your quad is fine. 71 mph is in the ballpark. You obviously beat him to the 300' mark, thats where real drag races are performed. If you want to go a little faster than 71mph, do as the other person said and install a 14 tooth front sprocket.

I weigh 180. Airtemp was about 82. Flat level blacktop. Wore a helmet with visor but crouched a little. The cop tells me the guns are "calibrated" before each shift and "certified" yearly. He locked me in so I could see it on his dash. He also chewed me out for going that fast because when he agreed to radar me he thought 4-wheelers did about 45 or so. Mine is so stock, I am still on my first tank of gas. Besides tearing up my yard, I have only been on 1 real ride with it which was about 40 miles or so. Most of this was in 1st or 2nd gear because I had one son on it with me and my other son was riding his new 125 for the first time.
I have been out of town so that limits the riding. I did order a motion-pro twist throttle today along with new grips and am thinking seriously about the CT Racing bolt on kit with header pipe, supertrap, and jet kit. I'm hoping that besides more power, this may give me more top end. A larger front sprocket may be your answer but in just the short time I've ridden mine, the gearing already seems pretty tall.

Adjusting the valves is important. I checked mine at about 6 hours and they were tight.
Stock, what's that? A little mod you could do is trim the flaps out of the snorkle and put in 145/150 main jets and turn your mixture screws out about another 1/4 turn and ckeck and adjust your float level.
