I failed to mention in the first post but I did check the filter and it was clean. I pondered to run down the road one timewithout it and the lid just to see what would happen. I chickened out because I did not want any dust/dirt/crap to get in my engine, so I just put it all back together and turned to you guys.

I appreciate all your help now I have to go tell my wife she was right.
