I don't know about the air boxes but 14mins uses an adapter the eliminates the air box and picked up 1.5 HP over running the stock box without a lid and the increase was across the entire RPM range.

I have a Pingry aluminum airbox and love it. It actually gave me more power than using the stock box without a lid. Halfway back the stock plastic box comes in on both sides about 1/2 inch. When you are using a bigger aftermarket filter like the Pro-Flow foam (Uni-style) it makes a real tight fit and seems like it would be hard for the air to flow all around the filter to make use of the total surface area of the filter. The aluminum airboxes do not indent like that, they are straight. This gives more room on the sides of the airfilter for air to flow.

All I now is that I could feel a little difference when I added it. A bit faster and I had to jet up one size.

I never said the aluminum airboxes flow more than running with no airbox. I said I think they flow more than the stock plastic box.

Some of us have to contend with mud and water and stuff like that. But if I rode mostly in the sand I would surely go with the adapter. Although I did read a post from someone that said they actually made more power on the dyno with an airbox. Go figure.

I have an adaptor and I would have to see a dyno run proving and airbox did put more power then the raptor adaptor. When installing mine I noticed a huge difference over the K&N filter, airbox and no lid.
