Default Lightening up you're engine

I'm looking for some advice from guys like 14mins and others that have tried radical mods in thier engines. I figured the yamaha forum would be the best place to post this

I'm ripping apart my 87 quadracer over the winter and plan on doing some internal mods.
My question has to do with lightening the fly wheel, transmission, piston?, and if it can be done without hurting performance lightening the crank and counterbalance(matching the weight removal of course).

I have full access to a machine shop and a room full of engineers. (from work).

Anyone have any ideas on what i can remove mass from without sacrificing to much structural integrity, I'd like to get some ideas so i can get with the engineers before i start this project.

Thanks
