If you're gonna buy used, you can't go wrong with a 400EX. They can be had for cheap. They have ton's of mod potential. Handle great. And are bulletproof. They're not fast. But they'll easily keep up on any trail or in the dunes with any of the afformentioned machines. Also they're plentiful low-end torque makes them easy to ride.

In defense of the 01 Raptor, not all of them broke. I'm not sure what caused them to break, but I think shifting from reverse into first while still rolling backwards was thought to be one reason. Also, starting in gear might have been a cause, or was that what caused the starter to go out? Anyway, I haven't had any problems with my 01 Rappy, not to say that it won't take a dump on me the next time I get on it.

You can still get a good 01 without a lot of mods for around 3K, maybe a little less now that the YFZ is out. Of course all of them are in MINT condition and have LOW hours.
I love reverse. Where I race in the winter is indoors and you have to pull up in front of the starting spots and back into your starting position. The guys without reverse have to muscle their quads into position and I just pull up and back in. It's not that big of a deal, but the races are quick and you don't have much time to get settled in. I think it's a mental advantage having those couple seconds to settle down and breath.
